The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics strategic plan identified four strategic priorities including student success, research, and patient care. In several key metrics, the college has made remarkable progress on its strategic priorities.

In terms of these strategic priorities, the college is a national leader in three metrics:


  • NIDCR Research Funding

    In 2020, the University of Iowa was ranked 10th in the country, and 2nd in the Big 10, for the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) funding with over $6.4M.

  • Dental education research

    In a study by Expertscape, Iowa ranked 6th in the world (4th in the US) for number of PubMed articles published in the field of dental education. David Johnsen, dean emeritus and professor of pediatric dentistry, and Leo Marchini, associate professor in preventive and community dentistry, were both listed as leading experts in the field.

  • Patient care experiences for dental students.

    Among all accredited dental schools in the US, Iowa ranks 3rd in terms thee number of hours that Iowa dental students spend in clinics.
