Course Description

This will be a two-part course. The first part will focus on use of the open membrane technique to simplify alveolar ridge preservation. The open membrane technique, eliminates the need to obtain primary closure and associated consequences. It also makes the ridge preservation procedure accessible to dentists with relatively minimal surgical training. This overcomes the lost opportunity of preserving valuable bone dimensions and helps avoid associated future reconstructive complexity. The lecture will focus on the technique, materials (barrier membranes) that can be used and the scientific evidence available to support the use of this technique. The second part will discuss the concept of surgical safety particularly as related to dental implant surgeries and best practices to promote safety and success of dental implants with the aid of safety checklists.

At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the open membrane technique for alveolar ridge preservation;
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of this technique;
  • Understand the evidence-based decision tree on selecting appropriate membranes for this technique; and
  • Integrate knowledge of best practices for surgical safety and success during implant placement with aid of experts-developed surgical safety check lists.

Siva Prakasam

Dr. Sivaraman Prakasam is currently Associate Professor & Chair (DEO) of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He is an actively funded Clinician-scientist. Dr. Prakasam earned a Bachelor of Dental Science degree from Ragas Dental College and Hospital before completing a PhD in Oral Biology and Pathology from the State University of New York, Stony Brook and an MSD and residency in periodontology at Indiana University. He previously was associate professor of periodontics at the Oregon Health and Science University, where he served from 2014 until joining the University of Iowa College of Dentistry’s faculty in August 2023. He also served as a clinical assistant professor in periodontics at Indiana University from 2010-2014. Dr. Prakasam is a thought and educational leader in the field of periodontics. He is a recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation Teaching Fellowship award. He won the AAP Balint Orban clinical research award. His research program is focused on a group of proteins (Peptidoglycan recognition proteins) that are biomarkers for oral inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis, and he has received an exploratory grant from the National Institutes of Health. He is also the PI on an active industry funded Randomized Clinical Trail  (Biologically enhanced Site Healing during Alveolar Ridge Preservation - BESHARP).  He has published over 20 journal articles, and a few book chapters.
