Dr. Miguel Romero-Bustillos

Originally born and raised in the south of Spain, I attended the University of Granada, School of Dentistry from 2009 to 2014 with an internship performed at the University of Oslo, Norway in 2013In 2014. After I graduated from dental school, I joined the Department of Periodontics, University of Iowa, first as a Visiting Scholar for 1 year and then as a Ph.D. student in Oral science and as a resident. My interest in research has been focused on the understanding of the molecular mechanism that regulates the development of the dental root and periodontal tissues, with special emphasis on cementum. When outside of the clinics and the lab, I enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and reading.

I grew up traveling around the US, from Alaska to Florida, after spending a few years in South Korea. I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Florida in 2014. After graduating, I worked as a full-time research assistant studying children and adolescents with periodontitis. I then obtained my dental degree from LECOM School of Dental Medicine in Bradenton, Florida in 2019. Outside of dental school, I enjoy cooking, painting, reading, and playing the guitar. Dr. Wolf currently serves as the chief resident.

I grew up in Southern Minnesota in the small town of Blue Earth. I earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biological Sciences from Minnesota State University-Mankato (Go Mavericks!). Upon completion of my Master’s degree I moved to Glendale, Arizona where I attained my pre-doctoral training and Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Midwestern University in 2020. I am excited to continue my education in the Periodontics Department at the University of Iowa. Outside of residency, I enjoy working out, coffee and pizza (but not necessarily together), and frequenting the dog park despite not owning a dog.

I moved to Manhattan and attended New York University to obtain my dental hygiene degree. I later received my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from LECOM School of Dental Medicine, in Bradenton, Florida. I am now enjoying my time as a periodontal resident. Outside of residency life, I spend time going to the gym or with my dog, Mia.

Madeline Swenson
Dr. Madeline Swenson

An Iowa native, I was born in Ottumwa and attended high school in Cedar Rapids. Having an interest in science and growing up with parents who are engineers, I followed in their footsteps and studied chemical engineering. I soon realized my desire to work more closely with people and discovered my interest in dentistry. I am a loyal Hawkeye, earning my bachelor’s and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from the University of Iowa. During my time as a predoctoral student at the College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, I was involved in research related to dental implants which contributed to my decision to pursue a specialty program in periodontics. I enjoy my life outside of dentistry, taking every chance that I have to laugh with friends or family over dinner or a glass of wine. I also enjoy reading, traveling, and spending time with my husband and dog.

Mustafa Tattan
Dr. Mustafa Tattan

Syrian by blood, born in Dubai and Canadian by upbringing, I have learned that where a person comes from is not nearly as important as the condition of their heart and the content of their character. Prior to being a resident in the Department of Periodontics out in the beautiful state of Iowa, I obtained my Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the RAK Medical & Health Sciences University in my second home, the United Arab Emirates, followed by completing the Periodontics Postdoctoral Scholar Program at the University of Michigan. When not working on research projects that may hopefully impact clinical practice someday, I enjoy delving into the grand world of ontology, biking, traveling and above all spending quality time with my loving family and close friends.
