Gustavo Avila-Ortiz
Gustavo Avila-Ortiz, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.
Professor and Chair, Department of Periodontics

From 2009-2011, Dr. Avila-Ortiz was an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2011 as a professor in the Department of Periodontics. He was appointed Chair of the Department of Periodontics in 2017.

Kim A. Brogden, Ph.D.
Director, Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research

Dr. Brogden joined the College of Dentistry in 2004. He is director of the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research and a professor in the Department of Periodontics.

Steven H. Clark
Steven H. Clark, D.D.S.
Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Periodontics

Dr. Clark was in private practice dentistry from 1983-1989. From 1992-1997, he was in periodontics private practice. In 1998, Dr. Clark joined the Department of Family Dentistry as a visiting assistant professor and he is now clinical assistant professor.

Satheesh Elangovan
Satheesh Elangovan, B.D.S., DSc, DMSc
Professor, Department of Periodontics

Dr. Elangovan joined the UI College of Dentistry Department of Periodontics in 2011 after completing his doctor of medical science at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and his postdoctoral research fellow at the Forsyth Institute, both in Boston.
Dr. Elangovan holds secondary appointments at the College of Engineering and at the College of Pharmacy.

Sukirth Ganesan
Sukirth Ganesan, B.D.S., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Periodontics

Dr. Ganesan joined the Department of Periodontics as an assistant professor in June 2019. Prior to his move to the University of Iowa, Dr. Ganesan completed his PhD and certificate in periodontics at the Ohio State University in 2018 and a dental clinical research/post-doctoral fellowship (with Dr. Jacqueline Mays) at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/ National Institutes of Health (NIDCR/NIH) in 2019. Dr. Ganesan is a credentialed medical staff at the Clinical Center at the NIH, Bethesda, MD and is a guest researcher at the Oral Immunobiology Unit, NIDCR, NIH.

Georgia K. Johnson
Georgia K. Johnson, B.S., D.D.S., M.S.
Professor, Department of Periodontics

Dr. Johnson joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1991 after serving on the faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Dental College. In 1998, she became head of the Department of Periodontics; she stepped down in 2017. Dr. Johnson is also a professor in the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research.

Theodoros Katsaros
Theodoros Katsaros, D.D.S., M.S.
Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Periodontics

After completing his M.S. and certificate in periodontics at Louisiana State University in 2016, Dr. Katsaros became a clinical assistant professor in the UI College of Dentistry's Department of Periodontics. He is also the Director of the Periodontics Graduate Program and Visiting Scholar program.

Nancy Slach
Nancy Slach, B.S., R.D.H.
Assistant in Instruction, Department of Periodontics

Prior to joining the faculty at the College of Dentistry in the fall of 1985, Ms. Slach had experience in private practice and public health dental hygiene as well as practicing at the University of Iowa in Hospital Dentistry.

Eric Van Otterloo, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Periodontics

Dr. Van Otterloo joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2019 as an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate from 2012-2019 in the Department of Craniofacial Biology at the University of Colorado, School of Dental Medicine, before transitioning to UI.

Dr. Williamson joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2018 as an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics after completing her M.S. and certificate in periodontology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018.
