Newton Fahl, Jr, DDS, MS
Received his DDS degree from Londrina State University, Brazil, in 1987. In 1989, Dr. Fahl received his Certificate in Operative Dentistry and MS degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He is a Fellow member of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (AAED), and founding member and past-president of the Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Dentistry (BSAD). Dr. Fahl is a MCG-Hinman Foundation fellow and the President of the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry (SCAD). He is the recipient of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (AAED) 2008 President ́s Award for Best Teacher and the 2011American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) Excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry Education Award. Dr. Fahl has published extensively on direct and indirect bonding techniques. He is on editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Fahl lives in Curitiba, Brazil, where he maintains a private practice emphasizing esthetic dentistry. He is director of the Fahl Center in Curitiba, Brazil where he conducts hands-on courses on direct and indirect adhesive restorations.
Rodrigo Maia, DDS, MS, PhD
Received his DDS from Gama Filho University in 1994. After graduation, Dr. Maia served in the Brazilian Air Force - BAF (Captain 1995 – 2012), and in 1998, finished his residency program in Operative Dentistry (BAF), Masters (2004) and PhD (2008) in Operative Dentistry from Rio de Janeiro State University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (UERJ) and completed his residency in Periodontology in 2005 (BAF - Health Directory). In 2006, he was appointed as the Coordinator of the residency program in Operative Dentistry (Brazilian Dental Association – section: Rio de Janeiro). After he finished his PhD (2008), he received the Brazilian Air Force 2 year Scholarship to study abroad at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and in 2010, he completed his postdoctoral work at UI College of Dentistry, Dows Institute of Dental Research. Dr. Maia returned to Brazil and was appointed as the Program Director of the Operative Dentistry Residency Course at the BAF. He worked for 17 years as a part-time private practitioner in Rio de Janeiro. In 2012, he joined the Department of Operative Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and in 2013 became an Assistant Professor. He is the Co-Director of the Graduate Operative Dentistry Program and has an intramural dental practice in the Department of Operative Dentistry.
Robert Margeas, DDS
Received his DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1986 and completed his AEGD residency the following year. Dr. Margeas is currently an adjunct professor in the department of Operative Dentistry at the University of Iowa and is Board Certified by the American Board of Operative Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry, a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Society for Dental Aesthetics and International Team of Oral implantologists (ITI). Dr. Margeas has written numerous articles on esthetic and implant dentistry, and lectures and presents hands-on courses nationally and internationally on those subjects. He is currently the Editor in Chief of Inside Dentistry, on the Editorial Board of Compendium, and is a contributing editor to Oral Health in Canada. His memberships include OKU Honor Dental Society, American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Margeas maintains a full-time private practice focusing on comprehensive restorative and implant dentistry in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ed Swift, DMD, MS
Received his DMD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in Operative Dentistry from the University of Iowa. He practiced general dentistry for several years in South Carolina, and has taught at the University of Mississippi and the University of Iowa. He is currently a professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry and the Vice Dean for Education and Chief Academic Officer at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. In 2017, he received the UNC School of Dentistry’s top teaching award. Dr. Swift is a member of various professional organizations including the American Dental Association, Academy of Operative Dentistry, and International Association for Dental Research. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the Academy of Dental Materials, and a founding member and past president of the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry. He is a fellow in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Swift has published over 200 journal articles and is a co-editor of a leading dental textbook, Sturdevant’s Art and Science of Operative Dentistry.
