Dr. Kyungsup Shin completed his B.S. in chemical engineering at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea in 1998, his M.S. in chemical engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Taejon, Korea in 2000, then his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2008. In 2013, Dr. Shin received his D.M.D. from Harvard University (Boston, Mass.) and in August 2015, he completed his MS and certificate in orthodontics from the University of Iowa. He joined the Department of Orthodontics in November 2015.
Dr. Shin's areas of research include tissue engineering, biomaterials & biomimetrics, craniofacial anomalies, cleft lip and palate, and health care service and policy. His current research topic is the effect of mandibular advancement on velopharyngeal closure and speech performance.
Dr. Shin is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics, the Iowa Society of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association.
