College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics Waste Audits

On Wednesday, September 17, 2008 student environmentalists from the UI Environmental Coalition and Engineers for a Sustainable World, faculty and staff gathered at the Dental Sciences Building lawn to perform a baseline audit of the building's waste stream. Participants identified opportunities for reducing landfill waste and expanding what is captured for recycling. The results show that the Dental Science Building has an unconventional waste stream, with a significant amount of dental clinic-related waste. This includes disposable lab gowns, rubber gloves, sterilization pouches plaster and wax castings and plastic gloves. Facilities Management staff, the City of Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, and Iowa DNR assisted with the effort.
