The case for support of the

ARNE M. BJORNDAL ADVANCED EDUCATION FUND

benefiting the advanced education program in the
Department of Endodontics at the
University of Iowa College of Dentistry

Arne M. Bjorndal, D.D.S.

Endodontics is at the root of the comprehensive dental education offered at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. In addition to providing pre-doctoral dental students an excellent foundation in endodontic therapy, the Department of Endodontics provides graduate students an advanced education that is second to none.

Advanced endodontic training at the University of Iowa balances clinical experience with didactic instruction in the relevant clinical and basic sciences. A problem-solving approach is used to develop skills in the diagnosis and decision-making process of endodontic treatment strategies. Our residents receive hands-on instruction in the clinics, which are located in the Dental Science Building, University Hospitals and Clinics, and in the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Protocol-driven research and the opportunity to teach in the pre-doctoral program are also integral components of this exceptional advanced program.

Arne Bjorndal, D.D.S. initiated the department of endodontics in 1962. Originally part of the Department of Operative Dentistry, endodontics became an independent specialty program in the early 1970s under Dr. Bjorndal’s direction. Today, the Department of Endodontics is housed in a newly constructed wing of the Dental Science Building. More than 130 residents have graduated with an advanced degree in endodontics and it all began with Dr. Bjorndal’s vision and leadership as the founding chair of the department.

Dr. Bjorndal retired from UI College of Dentistry in 1984 and he died in 2012 at the age of 96. He and other endodontic pioneers of his time established the educational standards and foundation of knowledge that endodontists still rely on today. His contributions continue to influence the profession far beyond his 30 years of service to the department. It is in his honor that we seek private funds to sustain a bright future for the UI endodontic graduate program.

HONORING GREATNESS BY INVESTING IN TOMORROW

Fabricio B. Teixeira, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.

Like Dr. Bjorndal, you can help provide and sustain a margin of excellence for the advanced education program in the Department of Endodontics. Your investment, in honor of his many years of service, will have a lasting impact on the department and our residents. Please consider an outright gift or a five-year pledge in order to sustain and grow the University of Iowa’s ability to educate and inspire new generations of leaders in the field of endodontics.

The Arne M. Bjorndal Advanced Education Fund
Minimum Goal: $750,000

This fund will provide consistent and flexible support for the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics at the UI College of Dentistry. It will be established as a non-endowed fund until the minimum is met to endow the fund. Your gift will support graduate student and faculty research, the acquisition and maintenance of state-of-the-art equipment, instruments, personal computers, and software applications. The fund also will encourage professional growth among the graduate students by covering the costs for opportunities such as American Academy of Endodontics (AAE) conferences, association memberships, additional clinical skills training, and board review courses. It will fund the AAE Live Learning Center, which provides unlimited access to a complete library of endodontic educational presentations, materials, and continuing education credit online and on demand. It also will allow department leaders to bring nationally recognized endodontic speakers to the college.

In addition to increasing student and faculty support, resources provided by this fund will serve as a recruitment tool to help the department continue to attract the very best candidates. This new revenue stream will allow the department to devote unrestricted annual funds to other essential departmental priorities while encouraging a new level of professional engagement among the graduate students.  Please donate now to Arne M. Bjorndal Advanced Education Fund
