Dr. Susan McKernan completed her MS in dental public health from Iowa in 2009 and her PhD in oral science from Iowa in 2012. She is a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry.
Dr. McKernan teaches third-year predoctoral didactic classes and is the course co-director for "Practice of Dentistry in the Community -- I." She also teaches in the first-year preventive dentistry clinic. For postdoctoral students, Dr. McKernan provides instruction in the use of conceptual models, dental workforce, and access to care.
Dr. McKernan is a faculty associated at the University of Iowa Public Policy Center. Her current research projects focus on Iowa's oral health safety-net capacity, access to dental care for vulnerable populations, including children and rural residents, and incorporating geospatial analysis into oral health research. Other research interests include dental student career choices and locational relationships between general dentists, dental specialist, and other primary care providers.

Dr. McKernan is a member of AcademyHealth, the American Dental Education Association, the American Association for Dental Research, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and the American Dental Association. Dr. McKernan is also a member of the University of Iowa Interdisciplinary Activities Subcommittee of the Council of T-32 Directors. She is also an evidence reviewer for the American Dental Association. Dr. McKernan was the recipient of the 2010 University of Iowa L.B. Sims Outstanding Master's Thesis Award for her thesis, "Modeling a state dentist workforce using county level data."
