Dr. Staley joined the College of Dentistry in 1970. He retired in 2016 and is now a professor emeritus in the Department of Orthodontics.
Dr. Staley taught Orthodontic Theory, the Orthodontic Seminar, lectures in Growth and Development, was the director of the Orthodontic Laboratory, and participated in the resident orientation lectures and exercises.
Dr. Staley was an instructor in the orthodontic resident clinic and participated in the faculty private practice.
Dr. Staley studied dento-facial growth, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, and orthodontic materials testing related to enamel demineralization.

Dr. Staley has been a member of the editorial board of Angle Orthodontist, a reviewer for American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, a board member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics Foundation, and a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association, the American Association for Dental Research, and the International College of Dentists.
