Dr. Walton is a native of the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Walton earned a DMD at the University of Oregon in 1965. After two years in the US Army, he trained at the University of Illinois to obtain a certificate in endodontics and an MS in histology. Since 1983, Dr. Walton has been professor of endodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and was chair from 1983–1996. He is professor emeritus since 2011. He was on the faculty at the University of Connecticut and the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Walton is a diplomate of and has been an examiner on the American Board of Endodontics. He was editor of the Endodontic Section of Triple O, has published numerous scientific and clinical articles and has contributed extensively to Ingle’s Endodontics as well as to Pathways of the Pulp and Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Walton co-authors a textbook, Endodontics: Principles and Practice of Endodontics now in print as the 5th edition (2015) and translated into several languages. In 1997, the Iowa Alumni Association recognized Dr. Walton as Educator of the Year. He received the Louis I. Grossman Award for research contributions by the American Association of Endodontists in 2001 and received the IB Bender Lifetime Educator Award at the AAE meeting in 2012. In 2004, a University of Iowa Endowed Professorship was established in his name. Also, in 2004, Dr Walton was recognized by the President’s Club of the College of Dentistry by receiving the James H. McLeran Faculty Award.
Dr. Walton was responsible for undergraduate classes in the areas of clinic and seminar instruction in the junior clerkship seminar on pulp response, lecture and laboratory instruction in the freshman oral histology course on pulp/dentin biology, and the sophomore preclinical oral pathology course on pulp/ periapical pathosis. Dr. Walton also gave postgraduate clinical and didactic instruction, including seminars; orientation; literature reviews and case reviews; as well as proctor cases.
Dr. Walton participated in intramural dental practice in the Department of Endodontics.
Dr. Walton is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontics, the American Association of Dental Research, the International Association of Dental Research, the American Dental Education Association, the Iowa Association of Endodontists, the International College of Dentists, and the Johnson County Dental Society.
