The cover of the January 2007 JADA features an article regarding sugar intake and caries rates in children.  Without even opening the plastic wrap around the magazine, I had a sneaky suspicion that this might have something to do with the infamous Iowa Fluoride Study.  Sure enough, page 39 of the issue boasts an article by not only one, but five stellar Iowa researchers:  Dr. Teresa Marshall, Dr. Julie Eichenberger-Gilmore, Dr. Michelle Larson, Dr. John Warren, and Dr. Steven Levy.  Kudos to all involved in the Iowa Study that has been and continues to be so productive and so enlightening to the dental community!

This month’s issue of JADA also includes Volume 2 Issue 1 of the highly anticipated ‘Professional Product Review’.  For those not familiar with the Review, it was launched last summer by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs to replace the old ADA seal of approval for professional-use products.  Each issue provides research, review, expert opinion, suggestions, and practitioner surveys regarding various dental products; thus attempting to bridge the gap between those just looking for “the bottom line” and those interested in making solid, researched-based decisions in their practice.  This month’s issue discusses bonding agents, electric handpiece systems, and local anesthetic delivery systems.

If you have not booked your flights or hotel rooms for New Orleans, please do this immediately. Several hotels are full and you are required to stay at a convention hotel. Please arrange your flights to arrive on Wednesday in time for opening ceremonies and depart no earlier than noon on Saturday. Don’t forget to pick up your permission slip through Dr. Chalkley’s office, have it signed by your professors and notify the clinic clerks. Please remember that you are there to present your research, represent our school, support your fellow researchers, and have fun. This is a great meeting with a lot to offer!
The Iowa Research Day will be held on February 13th. Abstracts are due on January 23rd to Dr. Kurago. Please keep in mind the opportunity to enter the oral, poster, and table clinic competitions, and apply for specialty awards. This is a wonderful opportunity to see what your peers and professors have been working on. We are honored to have Dr. Kevin Hardwick, Extramural Training officer, NIDCR as our key note speaker.
On April 14th, the University of Iowa will be hosting the Midwest Student Research Conference. We expect 7 schools to participate from the Midwest. This meeting will include oral and poster presentations, tour of the Oral-B factory, and much more. Registration for the meeting is due February 16th! Stay tuned!
