2005-2006 Student Accomplishments

1.       Chris Hansen D2, attended the Hinman Student Research Conference Oct. 28-30, 2005 at the University of Tennessee, Memphis TN.  This is a great meeting!  One student from each dental school in the country attends with all costs paid by the sponsoring organization.  Abstracts for this meeting are due at the end of August.  Students and mentors keep this in mind!

2.       The Iowa Section of the American Association of Dental Research meeting was held February 7^th, 2006 with 32 predoctoral student research presentations.  Thank you for your participation.  All students be prepared to submit an abstract in January 2007 for presentation next year. Meeting date will be February 13^th, 2007.  Excellent experience for the national meeting!!

3.       Dan Whitney D2, attended the 42^nd annual American Dental Association Dental Students’ Conference on Research held at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and the Paffenbarger Research Center (PRC) March 19-21, 2006.  The U of Iowa College of Dentistry sends one student every year to this educational meeting.  The goal of this conference is to introduce outstanding dental students to scientists from the ADA, industry, NIDCR, and the ADAF Paffenbarger Research Center to raise their awareness of the wide-ranging careers available in oral health research.  Information is sent to all student researchers announcing the opportunity in January of each year.  Take advantage of your opportunities.

4.       Congratulations to our Iowa dental student researchers for being awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the AADR National Student Research Group for submitting the most predoctoral student abstracts for the 2006 AADR Annual Session.

5.      39 Pre-Doctoral students presented papers at the IADR/AADR meeting in Orlando, Florida, March 8-11, 2006. 6.      16 Pre-Doctoral students presented their research as the Midwest Student Research Conference at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, April 22, 2006.  Iowa student attendees included: D2: Kimberly Bell, Cameron Perigo, Daniel Whitney; D3: Sonya Newstrom D3, Lindsey Meder-Cowherd D3, Kimberly Pingel D3, Meggan Wehmeyer D3, Suzanne Stock D3, Rachael Davis D3, Mary Haley D3, Rachel Hardinger D3, Brandon Newell D3, Albert Eng D3; D4: Luke Foster D4; PD: William McBride PD, Matthew Drescher PD.

7.      The 2007 Midwest Regional Dental Student Research Conference will be hosted by the University of Iowa.  SRG President Lindsay Compton has identified April 14^th, 2007 as a tentative date for the conference.  Usual activities at the Midwest Regional include a banquet, poster presentations, oral presentations by students, luncheon and short business meetings, and a tour of the host dental school.

8.       Chris De La Mater, Joshua Everts, Joseph Meng, Laura Milnor, Ryan Morris, Katharine Riniker, D4, recipients of the 2006 Senior Research Achievement Award.

9.       Meggan Wehmeyer D3, won the predoctoral Max L. Smith Award this year at the February 2006 Iowa Section for the AADR meeting

10.    Lindsey Meder-Cowherd D3, 1^st place award, Dentsply Table Clinic Competition, predoctoral division, AADR Iowa Section 2006 and will be presenting at the ADA national meeting in the fall 2006.

11.    Lindsay Compton D2, 2^nd place, Dentsply Table clinic Competition, predoctoral division, IADR Iowa Section 2006.

12.    Chris Hansen D2, won 1^st place in the predoctoral division in the Iowa Society of Periodontology topic Award, AADR Iowa Section 2006.

13.    Ellen Robertson D4, 2^nd place in the predoctoral division in the Iowa Society of Periodontology Topic Award, AADR Iowa Section 2006.

14.    Laura Milnor D4, won 1^st place, predoctoral division in the Procter and Gamble Poster Presentation Award at the IADR Iowa Section 2006.

15.    Sonya Newstrom D3, 3^rd place, predoctoral division in the Procter and Gamble Poster Presentation Award at the IADR Iowa Section 2006.

16.    Laura Milnor D4, won  1^st place in the Basic Science category of the 2006 Caulk/Dentsply Competition at the AADR meeting in Orlando.

17.    Kim Bell D2, won the Public Policy Award for her poster at the 8^th Annual IHG Student Interdisciplinary Health Poster Session, held April 20^th 2006, at the University of Iowa.

18.    Brad Rand D4 (1^st pace), Joshua Everts D4 (3^rd place) received the Dr. Duane Schmitt Practice Management Award. 

19.    Josh Everts D4 was selected to receive the Distinguished Student Leader Certificate during the 89^th Anniversary Finkbine Dinner, April 2006.

20.   Stephanie Ritter D4, received the Academy of General Dentistry Award.

21.   Luke Freml D2, was a recipient of the 2005-2006 American College of Prosthodontists/Procter and Gamble Fellowship in complete Denture Prosthodontics.
