NIDCR Summer Research Traineeship Award

Since 1985, student research has been supported by a NIDCR Students in Health Professional Schools Short-Term Training Grant. Funding from this source supports awards for a three-month summer research experience. The Traineeship carries a stipend and small supply budget and must be funded between May and September. Applicants for this award must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Competition is open to all dental students and proposals are selected by the Student Dental Research Committee each spring. The NIDCR Student Research Traineeship is a federally funded program designed to give students a three moth exposure to dental research.  Awardees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  The stipend for this award is $5193 plus a small supply budget and this must be funded during a 3 month period between May and September.  Applications for this award will be accepted in the spring of each year.  A specific deadline will be announced.  Instructions for preparing applications are available in the Office of Dental Student Research (N406).  Awardees will be expected to submit written reports on their projects by a date to be announced in the spring.  Faculty mentors will be asked to evaluate the program in a report to the Program Director.

Awardees for the Dows Student Research Fellowship and the NIDCR Student Research Traineeship awards are selected by the Dental Student Research Committee, a subcommittee of the Collegiate Research Committee, chaired by the Director of the Dental Student Research Program.  The subcommittee is responsible for evaluating and reviewing the scientific merit and feasibility of each application and making recommendations concerning funding to the Program Director.  Students may be asked to attend a meeting of the subcommittee to present a short account of plans for their research and to answer any questions.  The competition for awards is open to first, second, and third year students.  Students may apply for a second award in a subsequent year.
