Bylaws of the IADR Student Research Group at the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry

(Gender:  Whenever the masculine gender is used in the bylaws, the same shall also signify the feminine gender.)

Article I– Name:

The name of this organization shall be the Iowa association of Dental Research/ Student Research Group (IADR/SRG) at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.  This Chapter is a student branch of the AADR organization.

 

Article II– Object:

The object of this group shall be to:

  1. Generate student interest in dental research

  2. Identify student interested in dental research and provide opportunities for discussion of research interests

  3. Assist in obtaining funding for student research projects

  4. Communicate with local, regional, national, and international research groups

  5. Disseminate student research ideas by hosting research seminars and displaying research projects on a regular basis

  6. Provide funding for student members to attend annual regional and national research meetings

Article III– Organization:

This group is a non-profit organization organized under the laws of the University of Iowa.  If this group should be dissolved at any time, no part of its funds or property shall be distributed to or among its members.  After payment of all indebtness, surplus funds will be used for dental education and research.

Article IV– Membership:

1. Classification: Members of the IADR/SRG will be classified as active members of the local chapter and the national AADR association

2. Good Standing: A member of this group whose dues and special assessments for the current year have been paid shall be considered in good standing.

3. Privileges: An active member in good standing shall enjoy all the rights and privileges of membership including the right to vote, to hold office, and to attend any session or meeting of this group.

Article V– Officers:

  1. Elective Officers: The elective officers of this group shall be a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and one representative per class.  A co-representative may be elected from the senior dental class to attend meetings while the other senior is on an extramural program.  Officers shall be elected for only one year, and cannot be elected for more than one term.

  2. Appointive Officers: The appointive officers of this group shall be a faculty advisor, graduate student representative and hygiene student representative.

  3. Eligibility: To be eligible for an elective office, a candidate shall be a member of good standing in the IADR/SRG.

  4. Election Procedures: At the March/April spring meeting, all officers, except the freshman class representative, shall be elected.  After nomination and seconding of that nomination, officers of this group shall be elected by a majority vote of active members present at the meeting.  Election of officers shall be a closed ballot.  The freshman class representative shall be elected during freshman class elections during the fall.  If, for any reason, a class representative can no longer serve, a new representative shall be elected in a class election.

Article VI– Duties of Elective Officers

President: It shall be the duty of the President to:

  1. Serve as an official representative of this group in its contacts with school and university, business, and professional organizations for the purpose of advancing the objects of this group

  2. Organize, conduct, and address meetings of the general membership.

  3. Collect and disseminate information on traineeships, grants, and resources for student research funding.

  4. Communicate with the local AADR chapter and the national AADR student representative.

  5. Appoint faculty advisor, graduate student and hygiene student representatives.

  6. Appoint standing and ad-hoc committees, committee members, and committee chairs.

  7. Attend the annual AADR/SRG national meeting, and to represent the IADR/SRG at that meeting.

Vice President: It shall be the duty of the Vice President to:

  1. Assist the president as requested.

  2. Coordinate the annual social event fo the SRG- the Fall Kickoff.

  3. Reserve rooms and dates for meetings.

  4. Serve as chairman of the Program Committee.

Secretary: It shall be the duty of the Secretary to:

  1. Keep minutes and supervise correspondence.

  2. Supervise the individual membership records of the group.

Treasurer: It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to:

  1. Supervise the collection and bankings of all monies of the group, the disbursements of which shall be by check.

Class Representative: It shall be the duty of the class officer to:

  1. Serve as representative of this group in contacts with student tin that class.

Article VII- Appointive Officers

Appointive officers include the SRG faculty advisor, graduate student representative, and hygiene student representative.

Faculty Advisor: It shall be the duty of the faculty advisor to:

  1. Serve as representative of this group in its contacts with the school and university, civic, business, and professional organizations for the purpose of advancing the objectives of this group

  2. Attend the annual regional SRG meeting with student members.

  3. Assist the elective officers as requested.

Graduate and Hygiene Representatives: It shall be their duty to:

  1. Serve as a representative of this group in contacts with their respective programs.

Article VIII- Meetings:

Research Meetings: The University of Iowa SRG shall host the Midwestern Regional SRG Meeting on a rotating basis in coordination with the chapters in the region to include Missouri, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado.
