Delta Dental of Iowa Makes a $1.5 Million Gift Commitment to the UI College of Dentistry

Delta Dental of Iowa has made a $1.5 million gift commitment to help fund a planned major renovation of the Dental Science Building. The gift was made by the newly formed Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Dean David Johnsen said, "Delta Dental of Iowa and the College of Dentistry see this gift as a long-term investment in the oral health of Iowans and in a top-tier dental school."

Donn Hutchins, president and CEO of Delta Dental of Iowa and president of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation, commented, "This gift is also an investment in the future, which is critically important given Iowa's aging population and the growing need for dental services in rural Iowa..."

The College will name the Geriatric and Special Care Clinic area in the renovated dentistry building in recognition of Delta Dental of Iowa's gift. The naming is subject to approval by the University of Iowa's President's Office. (5/08/08)

Dr. Peter Damiano to Receive 2008 Regents Award for Faculty Excellence

Dr. Peter Damiano, Preventive and Community Dentistry, and director, Public Policy Center, is one of six UI faculty who will receive the 2008 Regents Award for Faculty Excellence.

Faculty members who are nominated for the Regents Award must have rendered significant service to the University of Iowa and/or to the State of Iowa. Each nominee must also have distinction in at least two of the following four areas: teaching, research/creative activity, extension/professional practice, or service. Each nominee must be a currently active tenured faculty member who has been employed in a tenure-track position at the University of Iowa for a minimum of fifteen years by the date the award is made. Dr. David Drake is President-Elect of the UI Faculty Senate

Dr. David Drake, Department of Endodontics and Dows, is now president-elect of the UI Faculty Senate. During his three-year commitment, Dr. Drake will serve as vice president (president-elect) the first year, president of the Faculty Senate during the second year, and past-president during the final year. Dr. Drake is the first dental faculty to become president-elect of the Faculty Senate. (5/01/08)

Pre-D1 Matt Drescher Wins Award

Matt Drescher, a pre-D1, won an award for his poster, which he presented during the 9th Annual Student Interdisciplinary Health Research Poster Session. Matt received the Liberal Arts & Sciences Dewey Stuit Fund for Undergraduate Research Award for his research, "Switch Phenotypes of Peptostreptococcus Micros and Susceptibility to Beta-Defensins." Drs. Sophie Joly, Dows; Georgia Johnson, Perio; and Janet Guthmiller, formerly Perio and Dows, were Matt's mentors. (5/01/08)

Dr. Justo Miguel Bonomie ('98) Elected Dean of the University of the Andes (Merida, Venezuela)

Dr. Justo Bonomie, who graduated from the College of Dentistry's radiology program in 1998, has been elected dean of the University of the Andes in Merida, Venezula. Dr. Bonomie will serve from 2008-2011 and will assume office on May 16.

Before being elected to his current post, Dr. Bonomie was head of radiology at the dental college and was certified as an oral and maxillofacial radiologist. (5/01/08)

UI Dental Students Attend 2008 Midwest Regional Dental Student Research Conference

Seven UI dental students attended the 2008 Midwest Regional Dental Student Research Conference, which was hosted by the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry: Jared Sorensen (D2); Joe Tesene, Mike McEwan, and David Haderlie (all D3); Matt Drescher (pre-D1); and Will McBride and Lindsey Pingel (both D2). Dr. John Warren, director of the student research program, and Dr. Christopher Squier, director of graduate studies, also attended. They were joined 33 other students from the Universities of Minnesota; Missouri-Kansas City; Illinois-Chicago; Colorado; and Manitoba. The program included talks by Dr. James Swift ('80 UI dental graduate), professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Minnesota, and immediate past president of ADEA, and Dr. Sumita Mitra, a corporate scientist from 3M-ESPE. Dr. Christopher Squier Attends Iowa Governor Culver's Signing of the Smoke-Free Air Act

Dr. Christopher Squier, Dows, and Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine, attended the April 15, 2008, signing of the Smoke-Free Air Act in the State Capitol. With this legislation, smoking will be banned in public places after July 1, 2008. The ban will include restaurants, bars, and workplaces.

Dr. Squier has been an advocate of tobacco cessation and supported the Smoke-Free Air Act. He was appointed to the Iowa Commission on Tobacco Use Prevention and Control in 2002 and is the current chair. (5/01/08)

Lindsay Compton (D4) Wins Provost Award at the Student Interdisciplinary Health Research Poster Session

Lindsay Compton (D4) won a Provost Award at the 9th Annual UI Student Interdisciplinary Health Research Poster Session, which was held April 15, 2008, in the EMRB Atrium. Of the 32 student researchers from across the campus who presented research projects, three were from the College of Dentistry: Sarah Murrell (D2), Lindsay Compton (D4), and Maegan J. Johnson.

Rachael Revell Receives Two Awards During ADEA and AADR Meetings

Rachael Revell (D3) received an AADR/ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellowship during the recent ADEA/AADR meeting sessions, which were held in Dallas, Texas.

The fellowship encourages and prepares students to enter academic dentistry. The year-long fellowship program for the student and his/her faculty mentor includes attending a summer fellow/mentor training session as well as the AADR/ADEA annual session during the fellowship year.

Rachael was one of 11 predoctoral students from the U.S. and Canada to receive this award.

Rachael also received the ADEA/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Preventive Dentistry Scholarship, which recognized academic excellence in preventive dentistry. She was one of 12 predoctoral students who were given the award.

Ms. Marsha Cunningham and Dr. Teresa Marshall, both Preventive & Community, are Rachael's mentors. (4/18/08)

Dr. Yvonne Chalkley Awarded the 2008 Jean Jew Women's Rights Award

Dr. Yvonne Chalkley, associate dean for student affairs, curriculum, admission and financial aid at the College of Dentistry, received the 2008 Jean Jew Women's Rights Award during the "Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women," which was held Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in the IMU Richey Ballroom.

The Jean J. Jew Women's Rights Award was established in the spring of 1992 to honor Dr. Jean Jew, professor, Anatomy, and others who demonstrate outstanding effort or achievement in improving the status of women on campus. The award was created by the UI Council on the Status of Women (CSW) and co-sponsored by the UI Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC). The award honors women's right at The University of Iowa. Dr. Teresa Morgan Named to Examination Committee of the ABOMS

Dr. Teresa Morgan, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, has accepted an appointment to the examination committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), the dental specialty certifying board that represents more than 4,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States.

Dr. Morgan is a diplomate of ABOMS and a graduate of the UI College of Dentistry. She completed her residency at the UI and joined the faculty in 2001. (4/18/08)

Alumnus M. Todd Brandt ('99 DDS) Honors Memory of Dean James McLeran with Book Dedication

M Todd Brandt ('99 DDS) recently honored the memory of former UI College of Dentistry Dean James H. McLeran, who served as dean from 1974-1995. Dean McLeran died in 2000. Dr. Brandt, who edited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, noted McLeran's contributions to the profession of dentistry in his dedication.

Dr. Brandt is service chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at August Medical Center in Fishersville, Va., where he also has a private practice. In a message to the College of Dentistry, Brandt wrote, "Dean McLeran was a role model for me and a wonderful man. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Iowa grad, I know what he did to help my career and the impact his legacy has had on dentistry across the country." (4/11/08)

Jessica Boehrs Places Second in the 2008 AADR/Hatton Awards Competition

Jessica Boehrs (D3) placed second in the 2008 AADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition for Junior Investigators for her research, which was presented at this year's AADR meeting in Dallas. The objective of Jessica's presentation, "Use of 3-Dimensional Culture Chamber for Osseous Tissue Engineering" was to determine if 3D culture models could be used for tissue engineering bone.

To compete for this prestigious award, Jessica's abstract was initially selected from a group of student abstracts submitted last September. From this group, nine semi-finalists were selected to compete in the AADR Hatton competition in Dallas. The AADR Hatton Committee selected three finalists from the group, who will compete at the IADR level in July 2008 at the Toronto IADR meeting. Jessica will compete against 36 other international student research finalists from Europe, China, South America, Japan, Mexico, Australia and Africa.

Co-authors on Jessica's paper include Rebecca Zaharias, formers Dows; Denise Seabold and John Laffoon, Dows; Dr. Joon Ko, Department of Prosthodontics; and her mentor, Dr. Galen Schneider, head, Department of Prosthodontics. (4/11/08)

Drs. Jane Chalmers and Ronald Ettinger Lecture at the National University of Singapore and National Dental Centre

Dr. Jane Chalmers, Preventive & Community Dentistry, and Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Prosthodontics and Dows, lectured at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National Dental Centre (NDC) for the week of March 19-26, 2008.

Drs. Ettinger and Chalmers each gave seven lectures during their week-long visit: two days of lectures for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty at the NUS; a one-day program at the NDC for NDC staff, which included dental hygienists, therapist, graduate students and representatives from the Health Promotion Board. They attended other meetings and focus groups, including meetings with the chief dental officer for Singapore, the dean and his staff of NUS, and the curriculum committee at NUS.

They also visited with Iowa alumni: Dr. Jennifer Neo ('94, Operative Dentistry); Dr. May Lin Chen ('79, Fixed Prosthodontics); and Dr. Stephen Hsu ('94, Pediatric Dentistry and '97, PhD Dentist-Scientist). (4/11/08)

Hyrum Cannon Wins AADR Fellowship Award

Hyrun Cannon (D3) won an AADR Student Research Fellowship Award for his research, "Children's and Parents' Age 13 with Dental Fluorosis, Non-Fluoride Opacities, and Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) Scores."

The goals of Hyrum's project are to describe and compare children's and parents' esthetic perceptions data at age 13 regarding overall satisfaction and components of satisfaction versus dissatisfaction; determine the DAI for each subject by measuring dental casts; and examine the relationship between children's and parent's esthetic perceptions and fluorosis, non-fluoride opacities, and DAI, and assess the relative importance of these factors in explaining these perceptions and satisfactions. Dental fluorosis, non-fluoride opacities and DAI scores are dental components that will be utilized, as collected in the Iowa Fluoride Study (IFS). An assessment can be made determining which are stronger predictors of parental satisfaction.

Hyrum's mentor is Dr. Steve Levy, Preventive and Community Dentistry. Dr. John Warren and Barb Broffitt, both Preventive and Community Dentistry, are also assisting Hyrum. (4/11/08)

Dr. Dan Thunell Wins First Place at MSP Meeting

Dr. Dan Thunell, a third-year periodontics resident, received first place in the Graduate Student Research Forum during the Midwest Society of Periodontology (MSP) meeting, which was held in Chicago on February 23-24, 2008. He was one of three finalists selected to compete in this prestigious competition. Dr. Thunell's presentation was entitled, "A novel comprehensive assay demonstrates reduction in gingival crevicular fluid cytokines and chemokines following initial peridontal therapy."

Drs. Bill Synan and Richard Burton Recognized at ABOMS Dinner

Dr. Bill Synan, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, recently attended a dinner given by the American Board for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), which was held in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Synan was recognied for the best case submission for the Surgery I section of the oral certification exam.

Dr. Richard Burton, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, also attended the dinner. He was named the co-chair of the Surgery III section.

Both Drs. Synan and Burton are board examiners for the ABOMS, which is the certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the U.S. (3/25/08)

Dr. Axel Ruprecht Invited to Present and Lecture in Korea

Dr. Axel Ruprecht, OPRM, presented an invited paper to the Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in Seoul, South Korea, on March 15, 2008.

He presented "Specialty Recognition, Certification and Accreditation in the United States of America" and also lectured at the Yonsei University College of Dentistry, Seoul, March 17 and 18. His three lectures were "Interesting Radiographic Findings for Yonsei's AGD;" "Clinical Dental Education at The University of Iowa;" and "Dental Implants: Why CT?' (3/25/08)

Dr. Christopher Squier Reappointed to Commission on Tobacco Use Prevention and Control

Dr. Christopher Squier, Dows and OPRM, has been reappointed as a member of the Commission on Tobacco Use Prevention and Control for the state of Iowa. This will be his third appointment with the commission. Dr. Squier's new term will begin in May and conclude in April 2011. (3/25/08)

Dr. Michael Meharry Receives Grant from Delta Dental of Iowa

Dr. Michael Meharry, a resident in the Department of Operative Dentistry, has received a Delta Dental of Iowa Graduate Student Thesis Award. His grant money will be spent on thesis printing and binding costs, lab supplies and equipment, and travel expenses to present at IADR in Toronto.

Dr. Meharry's thesis is titled "A Comparison of Micro Digital Photography (MDP) and Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence (QLF) in Early Caries Detection. (3/14/08)

Iowa State Board of Regents Approves the College of Dentistry's Plans to Renovate

The College of Dentistry is moving forward with plans to renovate the 35-year-old Dental Science Building.

At the February 7 meeting in Ames, the Board of Regents approved the college's request to select an architectural firm and proceed with planning for the project.

The College of Dentistry officials want to transform the building by renovating and expanding clinical areas, increasing classroom and student space, and upgrading dental research facilities.

The Dental Science Building, completed in 1973, has 200,844 gross square feet. The building's south wing is dedicated to patient care and associated clinical support. The north wing houses dental research laboratories, college administration offices, and the preventive and community dentistry department.

The second floor of the building's north wing was renovated in 1998 to create a simulation clinic for pre-clinical instruction as well as a new classroom and instructional bench lab.

The college's general and specialty dental care clinics receive about 125,000 patient visits each year. (3/06/08)

55th Annual Research Day of the Iowa Section of the AADR Held March 11, 2008

The 55th Annual Research Day of the Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) was held Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. The keynote speaker was Dr. Jeffrey Murray, UI College of Medicine, who presented “Genomic Approaches to Craniofacial Development.”

The formal program included 61 oral and poster presentations by faculty; pre-dental, pre-doctoral, and post-doctoral students; and staff. Presentations, judging and viewing followed Dr. Murray’s presentation. A reception and awards banquet was held Tuesday evening at the Marriot in Coralville. (3/11/08)

Dr. Patricia Meredith Selected for 2008 The Best of the U.S..

Dr. Patricia Meredith, Department of Hospital Dentistry, was recently selected for inclusion in The Best of the U.S.'s 2008 list of the best professionals in the nation.

Dr. Meredith is division director, general dentistry, and the medical director of the department. (3/06/08)

Dr. Julie Eichenberger Gilmore Joins Board of Editors for Journal of the American Dietetic Association

Dr. Julie Eichenberger Gilmore, Preventive & Community Dentistry, has been invited to join the board of editors for the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. As a board member, Dr. Gillmore will be asked to review 12 to 24 manuscripts each year and provide advice on matters related to journal policy and publications. Additionally, she may be asked to write research editorials, review books, and serve as a mitigating reviewer on manuscripts with differing reviews. Board members may also act as spokepersons for the journal and alert the editor-in-chief regarding emerging issues, potential authors, or important topics. (3/05/08)

Dr. Emad Estafanous Receives First Place in APS Poster Competition

Dr. Emad Estafanous, Department of Prosthodontics, received first place in the poster competition during the 80th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Prosthodontics Society (APS). The meeting was held February 21 and 22, 2008, at the Westin Chicago River North Hotel in Chicago.

Dr. Estafanous's poster was entitled "Transitional implants in patients wityh Sjogren's syndrome: technique for immediate fixed dentures." His presentation described a new fast and simple laboratory technique to construct a fixed removable complete denture supported by transitional implants inserted immediately after extractions and surgical placement of the transitional implants with minimum intraoral interference and adjustments. Dr. David Gratton Attends ACPEF and LMT Conferences

Dr. David Gratton, Department of Prosthodontics, was one of the organizers of a recent meeting of the American College of Prosthodontics Education Foundation (ACPEF), which was held January 15 at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The purpose of the first Digital Prosthodontics Technology Conference was to propose that the technologies that are currently affecting dentistry be assimilated into the educational programs of predoctoral and postdoctoral dental students throughout the U.S. (3/05/08)

Dr. Karen Potter Receives Delta Dental Graduate Student Thesis Award

Dr. Karen Potter, resident in the Department of Endodontics, has received a Delta Dental Graduate Student Thesis Award. She will use the award money to conduct a written survey of 1500 U.S. endodontists, in Iowa and nationwide, on implant placement. The grant money will cover the cost of printing cover letters, survey, mailing costs, and data tabulation fees.

The topic of implant placement by endodontists is currently being debated by members of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), specifically whether or not surgical implant placement should be included in the scope of endodontic practice.

Her research team includes Dr. Michelle McQuistan, Preventive and Community Dentistry, who will be an advisor; Dr. Anne Williamson, Endodontics; Dr. Peter Damiano, Preventive and Community Dentistry; and Dr. Fang Qian, Preventive and Community Dentistry, and Biostatistics, who will conduct the data analysis. Dr. Potter's project will take several months. She plans to use the data for a poster presentation for the fall meeting of the AAE and also submit the results of her research for publication in the Journal of Endodontics. (2/14/08)

Dr. Axel Ruprecht Completes Site Visits as a Consultant/Evaluator of the Higher Learning Commission

Dr. Axel Ruprecht, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, recently completed two site visits to schools in Illinois and Arizona as a consultant-evaluator of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools is one of the six regional organizations that accredits universities and colleges. Each site visit takes nearly three days and includes a six-member team.

There are five major criteria that the institution must meet. The HLC team, which usually consists of university presidents, provosts, vice presidents, and faculty members, meets with the administration, faculty, students, staff, the community and similar constituencies, and alumni, of the institution being evaluated. The HLC determines if the school has met the criteria and the consultants-evaluators and make recommendations. (2/14/08)

Dr. Rick Walton Publishes New Edition of Principles and Practice of Endodontics

Dr. Rick Walton, Department of Endodontics, has published the fourth edition of his textbook, Principles and Practice of Endodontics. The first edition was published in 1989. The textbook is the most widely used endodontic text in North America and Europe. (2/14/08)

Dr. Teresa Marshall Receives Collegiate Seed Grant Funding

Dr. Teresa Marshall, Preventive and Community Dentistry, has received Collegiate Seed Grant funding from the Research and Education Committee. Her project is "The Iowa Methamphetamine Associated Caries Study." Dr. Marsha Cunningham, Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong, Operative Dentistry; and Dr. Fang Qian, Preventive and Community Dentistry, and Biostatistics, are co-investigators.

The investigators' research goal will characterize the dietary and oral health behaviors and oral health status of a sample of meth users and nonusers to test the hypothesis that meth use increases caries risk, especially with accompanying sugared beverage consumption, poor oral hygiene, and xerostomia. The seed grant funding will provide a pilot study to assure the project is feasible and to determine sample size for power analyses. (2/08/08)

Dr. Christopher Squier Attends Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee Meeting

Dr. Christopher Squier, OPRM and Dows, and director of Graduate Studies, appeared before the Iowa General Assembly Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee. During a January 31 meeting, Dr. Squier discussed new funding for tobacco prevention and control.

Dr. Squier has been actively involved locally, nationally, and internationally with tobacco control and oral cancer prevention. Since 2003, he has been a member of the Iowa State Commission on Tobacco Use, Prevention and Control and he currently chairs the group.

Dr. Squier serves on the board of directors of the Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society. He is a founding member of CAFE (Clean Air for Everyone) Johnson County, and served on its board of directors. He is also a treasurer and member of the board of directors of CAFE CAN (the state organization for CAFE).

Dr. Squier is currently secretary and vice chair of the Iowa Tobacco Control Alliance (ITEPA) and a member of the Iowa Advisory Council for the American Cancer Society. He received their Lifetime Award of Excellence in 2004. (2/08/08)

Dr. Howard Cowen Appointed to UI Faculty Senate

Dr. Howard Cowen, Dental Clinic Administration and Preventive and Community Dentistry, has been elected to the UI Faculty Senate Human Rights Charter Committee. He replaces Dr. James McPherson, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a professor in the UI Writer's Workshop.

Dr. Cowen will serve on the committee for three years. (2/08/08)

Dr. Steve Levy Appointed to ADA National Fluoridation Advisory Committee

Dr. Steve Levy, Preventive & Community Dentistry, has been chosen to serve on the American Dental Association's National Fluoridation Advisory Committee. His appointment will run indefinitely. (2/08/08)

Dr. Jane Chalmers Appointed to Editorial Board of Gerondontology

Dr. Jane Chalmers, Preventive and Community Dentistry, has been appointed to the editorial board of the dental journal Gerondontology.

Dr. Chalmers is also associate editor for the dental journal Special Care Dentistry. (2/08/08)

Dr. Ronald Ettinger Attends Symposium at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur

Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics, and Dows, recently attended a symposium, Gerondontology: Improvement in Quality of Life, at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Dr. Ettinger gave four lectures during the symposium and also presented five lectures to the dental school's predoctoral students and one lecture to the dental technicians. (1/23/08)

Dr. Jane Chalmers Receives Collegiate Seed Grant to Study Coronal and Root Caries Detection Methods

Dr. Jane Chalmers, Preventive & Community Dentistry, has received a collegiate seed grant for $2600 to study caries detection methods for coronal and root caries in older adults. The study will use a visual examination, quantitiative light fluorescence (QLF), DIAGNOdent and Polarized Light Microscopy to quantify coronal and root caries lesions in 50 extracted teeth from older adults aged 65+ years. These technologies may assist intervention studies and caries clinical trials in older adult populations whose coronal and root caries have been underdetected and underreported. Dr. James Wefel, director, Dows, and Pediatric Dentistry; Dr. Deborah Dawson, director, Biostatistics, and Preventive and Community; and Dr. Justine Kolker, Operative Dentistry, are co-investigators. The College of Dentistry Receives Gies Award for Outstanding Achievement

The College of Dentistry will receive the inaugural William J. Gies Award in the Oustanding Achievement--Academic Dental Institution category. The College is being honored for the 125th anniversary celebration of the college.

The ADEA Gies Foundation picked the College of Dentistry because its submission "displayed superior quality among a pool of entries demonstrating outstanding vision, innovation, or achievement in support of global oral health and oral health education."

The awards ceremony will be held during the 85th American Dental Education Association Annual Session, which will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, in Dallas, Texas. (1/17/08)

Dr. Kenneth J. Versman, Iowa Dental Graduate, Elected American Dental Association Trustee

Dr. Kenneth J. Versman, an Aurora, Colorado dentist and Iowa dental graduate, has been elected as a trustee of the American Dental Association. He will serve as a trustee from the 14th District, representing Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

Dr. Versman received his certificate in periodontology and M.S. degree from The University of Iowa in 1972. (1/17/08)

Dr. Peter Lund Receives $5,000 Instructional Improvement Award

Dr. Peter Lund, Department of Prosthodontics, has received a $5,000 Instructional Improvement Award from the UI Council on Teaching. The funding will provide additional clinical simulation exercises to second-year dental students in teaching removable partial denture prosthetics. The new clinical simulation exercises will include: 1) submitting material and instructions to the laboratory for fabrication of a removable partial denture prosthesis; 2) evaluation of the laboratory-produced work for oral use; 3) fitting of a removable prosthesis in a patient; and 4) completion of additional clinical procedures that are necessary to complete the prosthesis for the patient.

This funding will provide students with a more comprehensive clinical simulation experience than is currently offered in U.S. dental schools. The clinical simulation experience will allow students to learn and practice the manual, intellectual, and evaluative skills prior to applying as part of an actual patient treatment. (1/09/08)

Dr. Rick Williamson Attends the Annual Session of the American College of Prosthdodontists

Dr. Rick Williamson, Family Dentistry, attended the American College of Prosthodontists Annual Session, which was held in Scottsdale, Arizona, in October 2007. During the meeting, he gave two presentations. Simulating one part of the Oral Certification Examination by the American Board of Prosthodontics, he presented his Part III Board Patient Treatment to the attendees of the Board preparation course, followed with an oral examination by two former Board examiners.

Dr. Williamson also lectured at the Prosthodontic Diagnostic Index Workshop about incorporating these indices into the Diagnosis and Treatment component of each of his three Board patient treatments. (1/09/08)

Dr. Dan Caplan New Head of Department of Preventive & Community

Dan Caplan, D.D.S., Ph.D., is the new department executive officer of Preventive and Community Dentistry.

Dr. Caplan succeeds Dr. Raymond Kuthy, professor, Preventive and Community, who served as DEO from 1999 to 2006, and Dr. Jed Hand, executive associate dean and professor, preventive and community dentistry, who had served as interim department head since 2006.

Dr. Caplan received his BA from the University of Virginia in 1982 and his DDS from the University of Iowa in 1988. He completed a certificate in general practice residency at the VA Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1989 and in 1995, he completed a PhD at the University of North Carolina. He joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry the same year.

Dr. Caplan was director of the PhD program in epidemiology at North Carolina and also actively participated in the predoctoral clinic and didactic curriculum, maintained a faculty practice, and served as reviewer for oral health projects submitted to the UNC School of Medicine’s General Clinical Research Center.

His research interests include outcomes related to endodontic treatment; decision-making in endodontics; relationships between oral and systemic diseases; and evaluation of diagnostic tests. (12/19/07)

Lindsey Pingel (D2) Attends Hinman Student Research Symposium

Second-year dental student, Lindsey Pingel, recently attended the Hinman Student Research Symposium, which was held at the historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, November 2-4, 2007. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry and the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society sponsored the symposium; the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research; the Procter & Gamble Company; the Tennessee Dental Association Foundation; and Viral Antigens, Inc. also participated.

Lindsey gave an oral presentation, "Defensin-attenuated cytokine responses to Porphyromonas gingivalis HagB in dendritic cells." Co-authors on her presentation included Kindra Burnell, research assistant, Dows; Dr. Xiaoying Lu, postdoctoral research scholar, formerly Dows; Dr. Myriam Belanger, University of Florida; Dr. Zoya Kurago, New York University (formerly UI College of Dentistry); and Dr. Kim Brogden, Department of Periodontics, and Dows. Dr. Michael Kanellis Receives ADA 2007 Golden Apple Award

Dr. Michael Kanellis, assistant dean for patient care, received the American Dental Association (ADA) Golden Apple Award during an October 30, 2007, dental faculty meeting at the College of Dentistry.

The 19-year-old Golden Apple Awards Program gives dental leaders, members and staff recognition in one of several categories, including legislative achievement; excellence in membership recruitment and retention activity; excellence in dental health promotion to the public; and inspiring careers in dental education. Dr. Kanellis was nominated for the latter category. (11/16/07)

Dr. Axel Ruprecht Gives CE Course at Dalhousie University

Dr. Axel Ruprecht, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, visited Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 19-20. Dr. Ruprecht lectured to dental students and dental hygiene students on Friday and gave an all-day CE course on Saturday. (11/08/07)

Dr. Christopher Squier Receives ACS St. George National Award

Dr. Christopher Squier, associate dean for research and graduate studies, was given the American Cancer Society's St. George National Award during a recent meeting of the Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS). The award recognizes distinguished and exemplary leadership, years of service, and commitment to the ACS.

Dr. Squier has been involved with the organization for more than 20 years. He has been instrumental in the Division's strategic plan for tobacco control by helping to establish tobacco control baseline and outcome data. Dr. Squier has served on the Midwest Board for eight years. At the national level, he helped develop and implement the first international Freshstart program.

He is a member of the Iowa State Commission on Tobacco Use, Prevention and Control and is involved with the strategic planning of many tobacco control-related coalitions. Because of the efforts of Dr. Squier and others, the Iowa legislature voted to increase Iowa's cigarette tax by one dollar. He also worked with officials at the University of Iowa to make the local Hope Lodge a reality. (11/08/07)

Dr. Steven Levy Invited Participant for Maternal and Child Health Bureau Expert Panel Meeting

Dr. Steven Levy, Wright-Bush-Shreves Endowed Professor of Research in the Department Preventive and Community Dentistry, was an invited participant in an expert panel meeting on "Topical Fluoride Recommendations for High-Risk Children" for the U.S. Maternal and Child Bureau (MCHB) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The meeting was held in Washington, D.C., October 22-23, 2007. (11/08/07)

Dr. Philip Wertz Attends the 21st World Congress of Dermatology

Dr. Philip Wertz, OPRM and Dows, was an invited speaker at the 21st World Congress of Dermatology, which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 1-5. Dr. Wertz spoke during a workshop titled "Skin Barrier: Mechanism and Repair" and also presented "Barrier Function, Sebum and Antimicrobial Lipids."

More than 14,000 people were registered to attend the scientific sessions and 120 countries were represented. (11/08/07)

Dr. Robert Schneider Attends the Annual FDI World Federation Congress in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dr. Robert Schneider, Department of Prosthodontics, and his wife, Mary Ann, recently attended the annual FDI World Dental Federation Congress, which was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dr. Schneider gave two invited lectures: "Aesthetic Issues with Dental Implants" and "Steps to Insure Success with Dental Implants." He reported there were 23,000 registered dentists from more than 120 countries who attended the meeting. (11/08/07)

Dr. Eva Dahl, Class of 1976, to Receive 2008 University of Iowa Distinguished Alumni Award

The University of Iowa Alumni Association has selected Dr. Eva Dahl, Class of 1976, as a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for 2008.

Dr. Dahl was valedictorian of her dental class. She received her general practice residency certificate from the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1977. She also received a certificate in oral pathology (1979); an MS in oral pathology (1982); and a certificate in endodontics (1982), all from Iowa.

She is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Dr. Dahl has been president of the Wisconsin Dental Association (2006-2007); a member of the ADA Council on Education and Licensure (2003-2007); an ADA delegate (2004-2007); a dental college representative for the University of Iowa Alumni Association Board of Directors (1997-2004); and a board member of the UI Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Dr. Dahl will receive her award during a June 7, 2008, luncheon and awards ceremony. (11/08/07)

Dr. Babatunde Bamgbose Wins University of Lagos Best Researcher of the Year Award

Dr. Babatunde O. Bamgbose, an OPRM resident, has won the University of Lagos (Nigeria) University Best Researcher of the Year Award for his outstanding research efforts. He is one of six faculty from the university who are receiving the award.

Dr. Bamgbose is a faculty member in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Lagos. (11/08/07)

College of Dentistry Researchers Part of Cavity Research Project

Dr. Steven Levy, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, will be subcontract project director of a multi-site research consortium that has received more than $1 million from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).

During the two-year project, several researchers from the University of Iowa and other institutions will study the genetic and environmental causes of cavities. The research will be part of the National Institute of Health's Genes, Environment and Health Initiative.

Investigators and staff from the College of Dentistry will include Dr. David Drake, Endodontics and Dows; Drs. Teresa Marshall and John Warren, Preventive and Community; Dr. Andrew Lidral, Orthodontics; Dr. James Wefel, Pediatric Dentistry and Dows; Dr. Julie Gilmore, Preventive and Community Dentistry; Barbara Broffitt, Preventive and Community Dentistry; Sally Santiago, Pediatrics, College of Medicine; and Dr. Marcia Willing, College of Medicine, who will also be a member of the UI research team.

The University of Iowa will receive $156,000 of the total grant funding. Other university participants in the research will include the Universities of Pittsburgh, Washington, Michigan, and California, San Francisco.

The overall director of the research project will be Dr. Mary Marazita, University of Pittsburgh. (11/08/07)

Department of Periodontology Faculty Attend the 2007 AAP Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) was held in Washington, D.C., October 27-30, and was attended by several members of the Department of Periodontics, including Drs. Steve Clark, Ali Fakhry, Lewis Humbert, and Georgia Johnson. Dr. Ali Fakhry presented a lecture, "Reconstruction of the Alveolar Ridge Using a Novel Inlay/Onlay Bone Grafting Technique," which highlighted site development for dental implant placement using autogenous bone. Dr. Fakhry's lecture was well received and featured digital video of surgical procedures.

On October 27, Dr. Mike Franzman (Iowa DDS 2004; certificate in periodontics and MS oral sciences 2007) competed in the prestigious Balint Orban Research Competition and was awarded first place in the Basic Science division for his presentation, "Targeted Antimicrobial Activity of SMAP28 Conjugated to P. gingivalis antibodies." His primary research mentor for this project was Dr. Kim Brogden, Department of Periodontics and Dows Institute for Dental Research.

At the opening ceremonies, Dr. Georgia Johnson, head, Periodontics, received a Special Citation Award recognizing her contributions to development of revisions in the accreditation standards for advanced education programs in periodontics. She chaired the AAP Task Forces to review these standards in 1999-2001 and 2004-2007. (11/08/07)
