Advanced Training Program
The department offers an advanced training program leading to a certificate in prosthodontics. The certificate program satisfies the formal training requirements for eligibility for the American Board of Prosthodontics examination. The program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. The certificate program is 34 months in length with a new class beginning July 1st of each year.
Graduate Programs
Students may also elect a course of study leading to a Master of Science degree along with the advanced training program. The Master of Science degree, obtained through the Graduate College of The University of Iowa, requires the completion of an original research project, preparation and defense of a thesis and a comprehensive examination covering the specialty of prosthodontics. Due to these additional requirements, students may require more than the specified 34 months to complete both the clinical and M.S. degree. Courses of study leading to a Ph.D. are available through basic science departments or through interdisciplinary affiliations.
Individuals pursuing a Ph.D. and an advanced training certificate should plan on a minimum of five to six years to complete both programs.
Program Strengths
The graduate and advanced training programs are designed to prepare dentists for the practice of prosthodontics, with a strong background in dental research. The programs may be modified to fulfill individual interests, goals and desires while still meeting requirements for the certificate and M.S. or Ph.D. degrees. We believe that the major strength of our prosthodontic programs is the variety and depth of patient treatment experiences available to our students. Prosthodontic graduate students spend portions of their clinical time at the College of Dentistry, University Hospitals and Clinics, and the V.A. Medical Center. Through these three clinical facilities the student will treat a variety of complex prosthodontic patients including medically compromised patients, geriatric
patients and patients requiring maxillofacial rehabilitation. The student will also have the opportunity to work closely with other disciplines within the dental and medical fields including: endodontics, otolaryngology, oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and speech pathology. Additional strengths include the faculty, research facilities, and technical support readily available within the department and through the College of Dentistry and the University.
Stipends
The program begins July 1st of each year and three first-year graduate students are usually admitted. The program is a minimum of 34 months in length. Upon completion of the program, residents are awarded a certificate in prosthodontics
and a Master of Sciences in oral sciences (if enrolled in the M.S. degree
program). Students will receive a stipend based on available funding. Tuition and fees are approximately $1,230.00 per year for
the certificate program and approximately $3,800.00 per year for the M.S. degree program.
As a result of rising educational costs and decreased state appropriations, the
University of Iowa College of Dentistry's Department of Prosthodontics graduate
program will be assessing a program fee of $5,000/year for all non-ADA D.D.S./D.M.D.
degree students effective for the fall 2008 entering class.
