The University of Iowa College of Dentistry Family Dentistry Mission Statement
The primary mission of the Department of Family Dentistry is to provide senior dental students with a comprehensive approach to
managing the oral health care needs of patients. It integrates basic science knowledge, clinical skills, and dental laboratory experiences, acquired during the first three years of dental school, into a systematic approach to providing care.
Students completing their education in Family Dentistry should:
1. Understand the principles of comprehensive treatment planning;
2. Know the ethical and medical issues involved in patient care;
3. Recognize the need for specialty consultation;
4. Demonstrate competence in coordinating and sequencing patient treatments;
5. Prepare for licensure examination;
6. Appreciate the importance and value of life-long learning.
