Brief Professional Resume:

Following postgraduate study at Boston University Graduate School of Medicine and Dentistry, Dr. Lew was in private practice in Quincy, Massachusetts, and Galesburg, Illinois. In 1983, Dr. Lew left private practice to become associate professor and associate chairman, department of hospital dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), University of Missouri, Kansas City, and Truman Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri. In 1984, Dr. Lew became associate professor and chief, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), LSU Medical Center, Shreveport, Louisiana. He was promoted to professor and chief of OMFS in 1991. From 1992 to 1999, Dr. Lew was professor and chairman, Department of OMFS, The University of Iowa College of Dentistry, and head, Department of Hospital Dentistry, Division of OMFS, The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). In 2000, he was appointed professor, Department of Hospital Dentistry, Division of OMFS, UIHC.

Teaching Activities: Dr. Lew is involved in clinical activities at the College of Dentistry's OMFS clinic, and also with The UI Hospitals and Clinics' oral and maxillofacial surgery hospital ward rounds, with both graduate and undergraduate OMFS clinics.

Research Activities: Dr. Lew's research has included the integration of 3D FCT and 3D MRI for the study of the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint; the biomechanics of the TMJ using a 3-D finite element model; and determining the comparative degree of osseointegration of titanium implants in autologous corticocancellous and pmcb grafts. Dr. Lew's primary interest has been in the process and clinical application of tissue expansion.

National or International Professional Appointments or Activities: Dr. Lew was a member of the Professional and Technical Advisory Committee for Ambulatory Health Care, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO); a member of JCAHO's Medical Staff Chapter Workgroup; a member of the American Dental Association's (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation; and chairman of the ADA's Review Committee on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Lew is past president of the American Association on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and a member of the Advisory Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Lew also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Lew is a member of the Iowa State Board of Dental Examiners for anesthesia credentials. He is a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Association for Dental Research, the Midwestern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Iowa Dental Association, the American Trauma Society, the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association, the American Dental Education Association,  the American and International Associations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the Great Lakes Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and the Greater Kansas City Dental Society. Dr. Lew was elected to the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and is a fellow of the Dental Section of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
