Teaching Activities: Dr. Johnson's teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate periodontics.
Clinical Activities: Dr. Johnson is a practitioner in the collegiate intramural practice.
Research Activities: Dr. Johnson's research has focused on the effects of tobacco products on oral soft tissues, their effects on inflammatory mediators involved in oral disease, and the impact of smoking on periodontal treatment outcomes. She is also currently involved in projects studying the role of naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides in periodontal disease and in clinical dental implant research.
National or International Professional Appointments or Activities: Dr. Johnson is a director of the American Board of Periodontology (2006-2012); examiner, American Board of Periodontology (2006); consultant to the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (1996-2007) and a member of the Periodontics Review Committee (2004-2007); ADEA Leadership Institute Fellow (2005); past AADR Nominations Committee member; past chair, AADR Nominations Committee; past chair, AADR Hatton Awards Committee; AADR Fellowships Committee (1994-1996); American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Inservice Examination Committee (1995-2002); AAP Education Committee member (1997-2003); chair, AAP Education Committee (1998-2003); chair, AAP Task Force on Revision of ADA Accreditation Standards (1991-2001 and 2006-2007); AAP Task Force on Local Delivery of Antimicrobial Agents (2006); AAP Task Force to Explore Options for Financing Postdoctoral Education & Faculty Development (2000); Dental Specialty Task Force on Faculty Recruitment and Retention (1999-2000); Midwest Society of Periodontology, secretary (1998-1999); vice-president (2000-2001); president-elect (2001-2002); and president (2002-2003).
