Brief Professional Resume:

Dr. Dawson joined The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2001. She is professor and director of biostatistics. Dr. Dawson also holds faculty appointments in the Department of Biostatistics and the program in Public Health Genetics, and is a member of the faculty of the Interdisciplinary Program in Genetics.

Teaching Activities:  Dr. Dawson serves as course director for Statistical Methods in Dental Research (111:212) and a special topics course in advanced analytic methods for dental research. She is co-director of the course Research Design in Dentistry (151:215) and is responsible for graduate-level sequences of lectures in study planning, statistical computing and oral epidemiology, as well as individual presentations in other predoctoral and graduate courses.

Research Activities: Dr. Dawson is involved with the statistical genetic modeling of human disorders, particularly in the areas of dental disorders, immune and inflammatory disorders and developmental disorders; statistical methods in human genetics, including applications in the areas of delayed onset disorders and ascertainment bias; statistical evaluation of data from clinical, basic science, and epidemiologic studies, particularly longitudinal studies and investigations of development and longevity population-based models; and classification and risk assessment problems.

National or International Professional Appointments or Activities: Dr. Dawson is chair of the Observational Studies Monitoring Board of the NIA-funded Longevity Consortium and a member of the NIDCR Data Safety and Monitoring Board, Adult Caries Prevention Trial. She also serves on the NIDCR Protocol Review Committee for the Dental Practice Based Research Networks and three external scientific advisory boards for NIH-supported research. She is a core member of the Clinical Trials Special Emphasis Panels sponsored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. She has served on the Clinical Aging Study Section of the National Institute on Aging (NIH). Past service includes appointments to the Cooperative Studies Evaluation Committee for the Health Services Research and Development Service, Veterans Health Administration Research Program, Department of Veterans Affairs, Washington, D.C. (1997-2004); the Veterans Affairs Biorepository Project Planning Committee (2001-2003); and the DNA Bank Scientific Advisory Committee for the VA Cooperative Studies Program (2002-2003).

Dr. Dawson currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Dental Research. Since 2001, she has served as statistical consultant to the editorial board of the Journal of Prosthodontics. She has served as ad hoc reviewer for scholarly journals including the American Journal of Human Genetics; Experimental Aging Research; Functional and Integrative Genomics; Genetic Epidemiology; Human Heredity; Journal of Dental Research; Journal of Periodontology; and Journal of Gerodontology. She was also on the editorial board of the Journal of Immigrant Health (1999-2001) and and was a consulting editor of the journal Health Psychology (1999-2001).

Dr. Dawson is a member of the American Statistical Association in which she has served elective office as program chair for Teaching of Statistics in the Health Sciences (1995-1996); representative to the Council of Sections (1995-1998); chair of the Section on Statistics in Epidemiology (2000); and vice-chair of the Council of Sections Governing Board (2002-2004). Dr. Dawson is also a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the International Genetic Epidemiology Society, and vice-chair of the Council of Sections Governing Board (2002-2004). Dr. Dawson is also a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the International Genetic Epidemiology Society, and the American Association for Dental Research.
