Brief Professional Resume:

Dr. Cowen joined The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1982. He is director of Patient Admissions and Emergency Care and director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Dental Program as well as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry.

Teaching Activities:  Dr. Cowen participates in predoctoral clinical teaching in the Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit, the Admissions Clinic, and the Emergency Care Clinic. He also conducts seminars and lectures in geriatric dentistry for predoctoral and dental hygiene students.

Research Activities:  Dr. Cowen's research interests include: epidemiology of oral diseases in the elderly, etiology of tooth loss, osteoporosis and fluoride intake, and the oral health of nursing home residents.

National or International Professional Appointments or Activities: Dr. Cowen is a member of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, the International Association of Dental Research, the Iowa Public Health Association, the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry, and the American Dental Association.
