

Teaching Activities: Dr. Chalmer's teaching includes predoctoral clinical teaching in the Special Care Clinic and Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit; continuing education to dental and other health professionals in special care dentistry. She is a co-director of the Geriatric Dental Fellowship at The University of Iowa.
Clinical Activities: Dr. Chalmers participates in the family practice for patients in the College of Dentistry's Special Care Clinic.
Research Activities: Dr. Chalmers works with longitudinal oral epidemiological research with a focus on geriatrics, nursing homes and dementia; oral health promotion in special care dentistry; service delivery in special care dentistry, including the use of dental auxdilliaries. Current projects include the use of oral assessments and care plans in nursing homes, and longitudinal research on the oral health status of older adults living in the community, including those with dementia.
National or International Professional Appointments or Activities: International Association for Dental Research; International Association for Disability and Oral Health; Special Care Dentistry (American Association for Geriatric Dentistry); Australian Society for Special Care Dentistry; Alzheimer's Association; International Federation of University Women; registered specialist in dental public health in Australia and specialist in special care dentistry in Australia; associate editor for Special Care Dentistry; vice president, IADR Geriatric Oral Research Group; committee member, Australian Society for Special Care Dentistry; coordinator and examiner for the Special Care Stream for the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Dr. Chalmers is a geriatric oral health consultant to many international government, community, and aged care organizations. In 2005 she was named Professional of the Year by Systems Unlimited, Iowa.
