International College of Dentists meeting 2015
Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy was inducted into the International College of Dentists during the recent American Dental Association meeting, which was held in Washington, D.C.

Academy of Dental Materials meeting 2015
Dr. Steve Armstrong attended the Academy of Dental Materials meeting in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii from October 7-10, 2015. He serves as Member-At-Large to the Academy Board through 2017. The meeting themes were (1) Emerging Materials and Declining Dogma and (2) Additive materials and layered structures. Professor Isabelle Denry (Pros/Dows) was an invited lecturer and presented her work with Calcium Phosphate-based Scaffolds for which she has received a recent patent. Upcoming meetings include Chicago in 2016 and Nuremberg, Germany in 2017.

Dr. Tracy de Peralta presented in the noon seminar series
The Department of Operative Dentistry hosted the visit for Dr. Tracy de Peralta, Associate Professor and Director of Curriculum and Assessment Integration at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. de Peralta shared her expertise on “Multisource Assessment for Better Reflective Practice” during the Noon seminar on October 7th, which was well attended and ended with a lively discussion on assessment strategies to promote reflective thinking and reflective learning.
Dr. de Peralta together with Dr. Kwon introduced the peer assessment of waxing projects into the freshmen dental anatomy course and expanded the multisource assessment to include: self-evaluation, peer-evaluation, digital evaluation and faculty evaluation which is a unique approach at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.

Operative Fall Picnic
The Operative Annual Fall Family Picnic was held at the Weeber Pavilion in rural Iowa City on Steve & Jan Weeber’s farm. It has been a great time to celebrate Fall with old and new Operative family members.

Dr. Denehy has organized bike rides in different locations with the Graduate students. They really enjoy the opportunity to "relax" and explore the beautiful landscapes around Iowa City.

Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) in Council Bluffs
The Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) is a large scale, two-day oral health clinic where dental professionals and other volunteers donate their time to assist individuals and families who face barriers to receiving oral health care. This year IMOM was held in Council Bluffs and the Operative Dentistry Department was well represented by Faculty, Residents and Staff.

Operative Dentistry Ribbon cutting ceremony
The Operative Dentistry Department moved back to the second floor (August 24th) and held the ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the new area including faculty offices, pre-doctoral clinics (D2 and D3), residents' office and clinic, Biomaterial Laboratory and faculty & student labs.

Pontoon boat ride on Lake MacBride
Dr. Denehy, Tracy D'Antonio and Michelle Zubcic organized a pontoon ride on lake Macbride. It was a great adventure and lots of fun.

Dr. Rodrigo Rocha Maia has received two grants from the American Dental Education Association (ADEA)
A $4,100 ADEA grant will support his research project, "Comparison of Light Propagation in Dental Tissue and Resin-Based Composite by Lasers." The use of laser (He-Ne) in three different wavelengths (red, green and blue) will be used to evaluated the light propagation (absorption, transmittance, attenuation coefficient, scattering and back scattering) in enamel dentin and dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) and to compare the difference among three incremental build-up techniques using a nano-filled resin based composite. Dr. Maia is principal investigator. Dr. Hanan Adel Elgendy, an operative dentistry resident, is co-investigator.
A $3,300 ADEA grant will support Dr. Maia's research on "Esthetic Blending: Visual vs. Spectrophotometer Data Analysis for Different Bevels in Class 4 RBC's Direct Restorations.". The goal of this research will be to determine what type of bevel to use on class IV build ups. Dr. Maia is principal investigator. Dr. Tracy D'Antonio, an operative dentistry resident, is co-investigator.
Sound human molar slab (1.5 mm thickness) irradiated with a He-Ne blue laser (wavelength: 405 nm) used to evaluate the light propagation.

Hansen Football Performance Center Visit
The retired faculty dental group visit the Hansen Football Performance Center which is the very new and very beautiful football practice facility. Bill Windauer organized the tour instead of the normal coffee meeting time.

Operative Dentistry Awards Banquet
The Operative Dentistry annual Spring Banquet was held on May 21st the Elks Country Clu in Iowa City. Staff and faculty were recognized for service to the department. Operative residents were introduced and several awards from Operative Dentistry were given to pre-doctoral students for outstanding achievement and character.

Dr. Paula Ortega- Verdugo (Oral Science PhD Candidate) was invited to the IDA Honor Table Clinic to present her Operative master’s project title “Eight Year Report of Stepwise Excavation Outcomes in a US Academic Setting”. Her mentors were Drs. Guzman-Armstrong, Warren, Dawson, Cobb, Blanchette, Kolker and Hernandez.

Dr. So Ran Kwon Appointed as New Associate Editor for Operative Dentistry
Dr. So Ran Kwon has been appointed as a new associate editor for the journal Operative Dentistry. Operative Dentistry, which has subscribers worldwide, is a refereed leading professional journal devoted to operative dentistry. Papers are submitted by authors from more than 45 countries under the categories of clinical research, laboratory research, clinical techniques/case presentations, and invited papers, as well as editorials and abstracts.
Dr. Kwon is excited to work with editor, Dr. Jeffrey Platt, Indiana University School of Dentistry, and to serve and contribute to the mission of advancing the practice of operative dentistry by maintaining a a continuous high quality of the journal. Operative Dentistry is the official journal of three academies: Academy of Operative Dentistry, American Academy of Gold Foil Operators and Academy of R.V. Tucker Clubs.

Lisbond'15 - Adhesive & Esthetic Dentistry Meeting (Lisbon-Portugal)
Dr. Rodrigo Rocha Maia was one of the speakers for the Lisbond ’15 Adhesive & Esthetic Dentistry International Meeting, which was held April 17-18, 2015, in Lisbon, Portugal. Besides Dr. Maia, there were speakers from Portugal, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, and Lebanon and 400 attendees from 25 countries. Dr. Maia was a co-presenter for the talk “Adhesion: Clinical Protocols on Tooth and Ceramic.” He was also a co-presenter on two other talks: “Direct Composite Resins in Anterior Tooth – the Step-by-Step Procedures” and “The Modern Aesthetic Dentistry – Tips for the Daily Clinical Work.”

Faculty/Staff Receive Awards During 2015 Frolics
Dr. So Ran Kwon (Operative Dentistry) received the First-Year Dental Faculty of the Year Award and Dr. Maged Abdelaal (Prosthodontics resident), received the Sophomore Teacher of the Year Award; Cindy Wiedenhoff (Dental Instrument Management) received the Special Recognition Award from the senior students.

1st Workshop on the Development of a US Core Curriculum for Cariology at ADEA annual session & exhibition (Boston-MA)
Approximately 70 members representing 45 Dental Schools (US and Canada) attended the workshop at the Sheraton Boston Hotel during the ADEA Annual Session on March 6th, 2015. The scope of this consensus workshop was to develop a US Core Curriculum for Cariology on the basis of national and international evidence and consensus on the current and future educational needs in the field of Cariology. The leaders of this workshop were Dr. Margherita Fontana (U. of Michigan), Dr. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong (U of Iowa) and Dr. Andrew Schenkel (NYU). Invited speakers and consultants were Dr. Nigel Pitts (King’s College, London), Dr. Andreas Schulte (University of Heidelberg) and Dr. Stefania Martignon (Universidad El Bosque Colombia & King,s College, London).

Annual Meeting of the Academy of Operative Dentistry 2015 in Chicago (February 25 - 27th)
All second year graduate students (Drs. Abdullah Alshehri, Aditi Jain and Hanan Elgendy) were selected to present table clinics at the AOD Meeting. Their presentations were outstanding and well received by attendees. Each of the graduate students was mentored by faculty in the Department. This collaborative effort characterizes the spirit and team work of the Operative Department. Also, several members (faculty and staff) attended the meeting and some of them went to the Midwinter 2015.
