Dr. Restrepo-Kennedy presented her experiences about the HDA national meeting (Boston#September 26-29, 2013). Also, Alicia Krones, Brittany Johansen and Nicole Major have attended the HDA National Convention with Dr. Restrepo-Kennedy.

Dr Armstrong honored Dr Hernandez for having completed 10 years of teaching in the Dental Anatomy course. This year was her last year as a course director in DA. Begining in 2014 Dr. Kwon will be the new course director.

Project SEALED - Sixth-Grade Students Visit the College of Dentistry
Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy provided an instruction prior to the visitors spending time in the Bench Lab with a hands-on activity. The students were able to place composite in cavity- prepped teeth and use dental instruments, a curing light, and a slow speed handpiece to polish and finish the resto- ration. Third-year dental students, Emily Hershberger, Meggin Passey, and Pokam Takougang assisted Dr. Restrepo-Kennedy with supervision during the exercise. Following the hands-on activity, the dental students led the visitors on a tour of the building.

Dr. Jack Ferracane, Professor and Chair of Restorative Dentistry and Division Director of Biomaterials and Biomechanics at Oregon Health & Sciences University, Portland, Oregon and Dr. Rodrigo Maia, Assistant Professor, Department of Operative Dentistry, The University of Iowa, College of Dentistry gave a 7 hour CE course. The first part was presented by Dr. Ferracane (Lecture): Critical assessment of dental composite, adhesive, and light-curIng technology. In the afternoon Dr. Maia was in charge for a hands on: MasterIng layerIng, anatomy, and fInIshIng of class IV wIth dIrect resIn-based composIte.

Dr. Carlos Jose Soares, Professor in Operative Dentistry and Dental Materials Federal University of Uberlandia-Brazil presented the topic: Restorative Procedures of Endodontically Treated Teeth – Use of Fiberglass Post in the Noon Seminar Series. After the lecture he participated in the Operative Dentistry graduate seminar course.

Dr. Jerry Denehy honored for 45 years of service
Dr. Jerry Denehy, Department of Operative Dentistry, and Ms. Linda Keller, Department of Orthodontics, were recently honored for their 45 years of service to the College of Dentistry during the recent All-College Conference by Dean Johnson. Also honored from Operative were Stacy Cash (5 years), Tammy Claypool (25 years) and Joyce Francois (35 years).

Dr. Yiming Li visits the Collegeof Dentistry
Dr. Yiming Li, Professor and Director of the Center for Dental Research at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry visited the College of Dentistry on July 30th, 2013 and presented on “Biocompatibility of Dental Materials-from Research to Practice” during the Dows Noon Seminar. The seminar was well attended and raised the awareness on how to address the relevance between research and clinical practice in terms of biocompatibility. Dr Yiming Li especially enjoyed the tour around the Dows Institute and the newly added West Wing facilitated by Maggie Hogan.

Operative Dentistry Spring Banquet
The Operative Department has sprung into Spring with many activities and accomplishments. Our annual Spring Banquet was held on May 2nd at the Elks Country Club in Iowa City. Staff and faculty were recognized for service to the department. Operative residents were introduced and a special farewell tribute was given to Joshua Cohen who will be graduating this spring and returning to active duty in the Navy as clinic director at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. Several awards from Operative Dentistry were given to pre-doctoral students for outstanding achievement and character. Christina G. Mulcahy (D4) was given the Academy of Dental Materials Award for research excellence. Matt Smith, D3, received the Wally Johnson award for outstanding character and excellence in Operative Dentistry. Jessica Wilke, D3, was recognized by the Academy of Operative Dentistry for excellence in Operative Dentistry. Janet Boyes, D3, received the Walter Williamson award, given to a dental student who demonstrates excellence in Restorative Dentistry. Zack Bandow was given the RE Minger Award in recognition of a freshman dental student who shows the qualities of persistence, hard work and cooperation with others. Congratulations to these outstanding students.

Dr. Lamya Alghaith, Operative Dentistry resident, won first place for her clinical poster entitled “The Use of Direct Resin Composite Restorations as a Treatment for Severe Erosion and Occlusal Wear.” Her mentors are Drs. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong and Deborah Cobb, both Operative Dentistry.
Dr. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong, Operative Dentistry, presented “Current Concepts of Minimally Invasive Caries Management” at the 151st Annual Session of the Iowa Dental Association held May 2-4, 2013 in Coralville, Iowa.

Attend the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Meeting
Several Operative Dentistry faculty and graduate students attended the April meeting of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, which was held in Seattle, Washington.
Dr. Gerald Denehy, Operative Dentistry, participated as an instructor in a hands-on workshop presentation with Dr. Newton Fahl, Curitiba, Brazil, entitled “Class IV Restorations Two Ways.”
Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Operative Dentistry, and Dr. Chris Barwacz, Dows and Prosthodontics, participated in the Educator’s Forum and were also judges for the research posters.
Alumni from the Operative Dentistry graduate program also attended the meeting: Dr. Karine Barizon, University of Colorado; Dr. Deise Oliveira, University of Colorado; and Dr. Carolina Mendieta, who is completing her GPR program at the University of Connecticut.

In the table clinic competition at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Iowa Dental Association, the following Operative Dentistry residents won awards:
- 1st place: Dr. Paula Ortega: Partial Caries Removal Therapies for the Treatment of Deep Carious Lesions: Advantages and Disadvantages. Mentors: Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Dr. Sandra Guzman-Armstrong and Dr. Marcos Vargas
- 2nd place: Dr. Mohamed Abou El Naga: The Snow Plow Technique in Posterior Class II Composites. Mentors: Dr. Gerald Denehy and Dr. Rodrigo Maia
3rd place: Dr. Carolina Garcia: Integrating Esthetics and Function with Direct Composites: A Predictable Approach. Mentors: Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Dr. Marcos Vargas and Dr. Rodrigo Maia.
Publication by Drs. Chris Barwacz and Marcela Hernandez Featured as CE Article in Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry
An article co-authored by Drs. Chris Barwacz, Dows, and Marcela Hernandez, Department of Operative Dentistry, will be featured as the continuing education article in the Spring 2013 issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. The article details a technique to characterize
both implant and other fixed interim provisional restorations for patients who exhibit a “characterized” dentition. The technique fosters better communication with both patients and ceramists.

The College of Dentistry was pleased to provide a simulation experience for seven middle school students from Columbus Junction, Iowa, on Thursday, April 11. The students are participants in Project HOPE, a career education pipeline program for the health sciences. Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy, Operative Dentistry, provided an instruction prior to the visitors spending time in the Bench Lab with a hands-on activity. The students were able to place composites in cavity-prepped teeth and use dental instruments, a curing light and slow speed handpiece to polish and finish the restoration. Third-year dental student, Pokam Takougang; and second -year students, Ryan Humbert, Nicole Major, and Brittany Johansen assisted Dr. Restrepo-Kennedy with supervision during the exercise.
Dr. Justine Kolker Selected to Attend the International Caries Classification and Management System Workshop
Dr. Justine Kolker, Department of Operative Dentistry, has been selected to attend the International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS) Workshop, which will be held in London (UK) between June 3 and 5, 2013. The goal of the workshop will be to form a global collaboratory among dental schools that are actively participating in writing evidence-based and experiential clinical protocols so the protocols can be implemented in dental schools worldwide. By Dr. Kolker’s participation in the workshop, the College of Dentistry will become a member of the Collaboratory. A Webinar on the ICCMS and expectations in London will be held in April or May for the selected U.S. representatives. The protocols will be disseminated via an interactive online educational program and eventually will be incorporated in clinical management systems such as Axium and Dentrix. The ICCMS will provide $3,000 in travel support for each representative selected to attend. Funding is available for 20 representatives from the U.S.
Dr. Denehy was the recipient of the Award of Excellence in Operative Dentistry at the Academy of Operative Dentistry’s annual meeting held in Chicago February 25-26, 2013. Dr. Denehy was recognized for his life-long contribution to Operative Dentistry and dental education. Dr. Daniel Chan, alumnae of the Iowa Operative graduate program and president-elect of the Academy, presented the award, giving tribute to Dr. Denehy for his excellence in teaching, mentoring and clinical practice. He praised Dr. Denehy’s teaching philosophy and dedication. “As a teacher Dr. Denehy not only shared his dental skills and knowledge to make students a better dentist, but he also shared his friendship and compassion that positively shaped their lives and their attitude toward teaching.” His legacy is reflected in all of his students’ accomplishments, commitment to the advancement of Operative Dentistry and devotion to teaching. A large contingency of past and present graduate students came from all over the world to share and celebrate this great honor.
The first and second year graduate students were selected to present table clinics at the AOD Meeting. These included: Drs. Rawa Alammari, Lamya Alghaith, Paula Ortega, Carolina Garcia and Mohamed Abouelnaga. Their presentations were outstanding and well received by attendees. Each of the graduate students was mentored by faculty in the Department. This collaborative effort characterizes the spirit and team work of the Operative Department.

Congratulations to Dr. Joshua Cohen and his wife Alison on the arrival of their new baby girl Sophia Cohen. She is also welcomed by her sisters Emily and Maddie who are very excited to help take care of their new baby sister.
We are very pleased to welcome our new faculty to the Department. Dr. So Ran Kwon will be joining the Department as Associate Professor on June 17th, 2013. She will be accompanied by her husband Dr. Ko Kwon and their two children, Julia age 8 and Joseph age 5. So Ran comes to us from Loma Linda University where she has been teaching and doing research the past two years.
We are very excited to announce that Dr. Rodrigo Rocha Maia has accepted a full time position as Assistant Professor in our Department. He is currently appointed as visiting faculty. Rodrigo has been a great addition to our Department with his wonderful attitude of teamwork and the sharing of both his clinical and technological expertise. He is married to Dr. Clarissa Fontoura who is pursuing her PhD in Oral Science. She is mentored by Dr. Lina Moreno for her thesis research in the area of genetics and cleft palate.

Fourteen West Liberty Middle School Students Visit the College as Project HOPE Participants.
The students participated in a simulation activity filling plastic teeth with composite. Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy led the instruction with support from Drs. Rodrigo Maia and Joshua Cohen, all from the Department of Operative Dentistry. Third-year dental student, Matthew Smith, who is the current chair of the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA), and second-year students Justin Anderson, Matthew Black, Amanda Eckhardt, Angel Hinson, Enrique Howard, Brittany Johansen, and Nicole Major, assisted the visitors under Dr. Restrepo-Kennedy’s direction.
