The University of Iowa College of Dentistry

Application process for the D.D.S. Program

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry participates in the Associated American Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS) and requires prospective students to file AADSAS applications. The application must be filed electronically at: http://www.adea.org.

  • You may submit your application to ADEA beginning June 1 of the year preceding the year for which you are seeking admission.
  • At the same time you submit your AADSAS application, send official transcripts from each institution attended to ADEA.
  • Send three letters of recommendation through ADEA or directly to the College of Dentistry.

Completed AADSAS applications must be on file with ADEA by November 1. If you provide a credit card number for payment, your electronic AADSAS application will be processed immediately. Otherwise, AADSAS applications require approximately two to three weeks for processing prior to being forwarded to dental schools for review. Apply as early as possible - even before you take the Dental Admission Test (DAT).

Dental Admissions Test (DAT)

Completion of the DAT, which is sponsored by the Council on Dental Edcuation of the American Dental Association, is a requirement for admission. Plan to complete the DAT no later than August of the year preceding the year for which you are seeking admission.

The application is available online at: http://www.ada.org or the Dental Admission Testing Program, 211 East Chicago Ave., Sixth Floor, Chicago, IL 60611-2678, (800-232-2162).

Deferred Admit Program (DAP)

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry's Deferred Admit Program (DAP) is open to residents of the state of Iowa. Academically motivated students interested in pursuing a DDS may be admitted to the DAP as early as the end of the first year of their undergraduate education.

While an undergraduate degree is not required for admission, students admitted through DAP must complete the equivalent number of hours required for a degree at their institution prior to enrollment in the College of Dentistry.

Students selected for the DAP must have and maintain a 3.60 overall GPA and a 3.50 science GPA. The DAP application deadline is November 1, at least two years prior to your anticipated enrollment. The Dental Adminissions Test (DAT) must be taken by August prior to the year of anticipated enrollment in the College of Dentistry, and scores on the individual sections of the DAT must be at the national average (17) or above.

The application for the DAP is available online at www.uiowa.edu/admissions/graduate/programs/program-details/dds-dap.html.
