Dr. Humbert joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry's Department of Periodontics as a clinical professor in 2004. Prior to this, he was an assistant chairman in the Department of Periodontics as Offutt AFB, Nebraska (1985-1992); regional consults in periodontics for satellite Air Force bases (1985-1999); associate professor at Creighton University Dental School (1987-1989); associate professor in the Department of Periodontology at the University of Nebraska (1987-1992); an associate professor in the School of Dental Hygiene at Midwestern University, Wichita Falls, Texas (1993-1999); chief, Department of Periodontics, Sheppard AFB, Texas (1992-1999); clinical associate professor, University of Texas Health Science Center (1999-2004); director of periodontics, AEGD II, and dental executive committee member, Lackland AFB, Texas (1999-2004). Dr. Humbert is a diplomate and member of the American Board of Periodontology.
Dr. Humbert was director of predoctoral periodontics at the University of predoctoral periodontics at the College of Dentistry (2004-2006) and postdoctoral director from 2006-2016. He is responsible for additional lectures and seminars to senior dental students and periodontal postgraduate students.
Dr. Humbert has clinic floor supervision for junior dental students and surgical floor coverage for periodontal postgraduate students, including routine periodontal surgery, augmentation techniques, implants, and IV sedation.
He mentors clinical track research with residents.

Dr. Humbert is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), and the Midwest Society of Periodontics. He is also a member of the AAP Foundation Committee, which is committed to establishing grants for future periodontal educators.
