Dr. Isabelle Denry received her DDS and her PhD from the University of Paris, France. After 20 years at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, she moved to the University of Iowa, where she is a professor at the Dows Institute for Dental Research and Department of Prosthodontics. Dr. Denry has written numerous articles on ceramics for dental applications and is a reviewer for many dental and engineering journals. Her research has been supported by Federal funds for nearly twenty years and she has been granted three US patents. Her latest work has extended to the field of biomedical engineering and development of resorbable ceramics for bone replacement.
Our research focus is on ceramics for biomedical and dental applications. We are developing bioactive ceramic scaffolds with engineered topography and chemistry for bone replacement. By modifying the chemistry of the base glass-ceramic, we are able to adjust the resorbability of the scaffolds. Upcoming aims include testing of these scaffolds in a rat calvarial defect model and monitoring bone formation using in vivo micro-CT. A wide variety of surface microstructures can also be produced to emulate cell-friendly scaffold topographies. Other areas of interest are the failure analysis of dental ceramics and the development of novel high toughness ceramics for CAD-CAM applications.
