Dr. Johnson joined the College of Dentistry in 1991 after serving on the faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Dental College. In 1998, she became head of the Department of Periodontics. She previously was director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics from 1993-1997.
Dr. Johnson's teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate periodontics.
Dr. Johnson is a practitioner in the College of Dentistry's intramural practice.

Dr. Johnson is a director of the American Board of Periodontology (2006-2012), vice co-chair (2010-11), and co-chair (2011-12) of the American Board of Periodontology, and former examiner for the American Board of Periodontology (2006). She is currently a member of the editorial board of Clinical Advances in Periodontics and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Advisory Board for the Gingival Diseases Curriculum. Dr. Johnson has served as a consultant to the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA, 1996-2007), is a past member of the CODA Periodontics Review Committee (2004-2007), was an ADEA Leadership Institute Fellow (2005), past American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Nominations Committee member, past chair of the AADR Hatton Awards Committee, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Task Force to Revise Accreditation Standards, and the AAP Committee on Education. She has also served as president of the Midwest Society of Periodontology. Dr. Johnson's memberships include the American Academy of Periodontology, the International Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
