Dr. Owais joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics in 2013 as an associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. She served as a faculty member in the preventive dentistry department from 2000-2003 at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan. She was the vice dean of the College of Dentistry at Jordan University of Science and Technology from 2012-2013 and the head of the pediatric dentistry section at King Abdulla Hospital, Jordan, from 2010-2013.
Dr. Owais is a predoctoral and postdoctoral lecturer and clinical instructor. She is co-director for two courses: Pediatric Dentistry Diagnosis and Treatment (90:140) and Public Health Issues in Pediatric Dentistry (90:220).
Dr. Owais treats private patients at the Center for Development and Disabilities as part of the department's Dental Service Plan. She also provides patient care through the UI Hospitals and Clinics pediatric dental operating room program.
Dr. Owais's research interests include prevention of dental caries in infants, toddlers, and adolescents, especially children of low income, limited access to care and high risk populations.
Also of special interest to her is the medical management of caries in children, adolescents and adults. She is conducting research on silver compounds and their effect on preventing and arresting caries. Dr. Owais is a co-principal investigator of an ongoing clinical trial investigating medical management of dental caries in children using silver nitrate.

Dr. Owais is a member of the American Pediatric Dentistry Association, the Jordan Dental Association, and the Jordanian Pediatric Dentistry Society.
