Lindsey Pingel and Whitney Dunn Receive the Colgate Palmolive Research Award
Fourth-year dental students, Lindsey Pingel and Whitney Dunn were each presented with the Colgate Palmolive Research Award during the recent 89th Annual American Association of Women Dentists meeting in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The award honors national excellence in research. Ten national scholarships were awarded with a $500 prize; Iowa was the only dental school with two awardees.
Whitney's research, "Smile Esthetics: Buccal Corridor Width, Gingival Display, and Tooth Shape," studied what aspects of smiles non-dental professionals find attractive and how the information can be applied to patient treatment plans to maximize attractivness while performing restorative dentistry. Her study also examined the psychological aspect of what makes a smile esthetic by examining the correlation between people's perceptions and actual ratings of attractiveness.
Lindsey's research was "HBD3 Inhibits Binding of Porphyromonas gingivalis Hemagglutinin B (rHagB) to Human Keratinocytes and Dendritic Cells." During the project, she used confocal microscopy to illustrate that HBD3 inhibits the binding of rhagB, a virulence factor of P. Gingivalis, to both dendritic cells and keratinocytes. This was a continuation of previous projects aimed at identifying ways to attenuate inflammation caused by periodontal disease.
