Dr. Garcia was a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio Dental School (UTHSCSA) where she served as chair of the Department of Prosthodontics from 2001-2010, and director of the Division of Advanced Education and External Affairs in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry from 2010-2013. She joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2013 as associate dean for education.
Dr. Garcia works with the administrative leadership, staff, and faculty throughout the dental college to assess and improve educational programs;coordinates teaching and learning programs; serves as a key contact for curriculum management; and tracks educational trends.
Dr. Garcia's research interests include the evaluation of loading protocol on implants placed in grafted and non-grafted host bone sites, exploring teaching methodologies such as evaluation of a pilot PBL project in removable prosthodontics preclinical curriculum, evaluating mandibular denture retention with and without adhesive, and evaluating and utilizing new technology to record movement of prostheses intraorally.
Dr. Garcia is chair of the American College of Prosthodontists Education Foundation and recently completed the immediate past presidency of the American College of Prosthodontists. She currently serves as chair-elect of the American Dental Education Association. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Hispanic Dental Association, the Academy of Osseointegration, the International Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Education Association, the Baylor Dental Alumni Association, the Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon. She is a fellow of the International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics, the Academy of Prosthodontics, the American College of Dentists, and the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Garcia will be inducted into the International College of Dentists in fall 2013.
