Brief Professional Resume:
Dr. Kuthy joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1999. He served as
head of the Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry from 1999-2006.
Teaching Activities:
Dr. Kuthy serves as course director for Administration of Public
Dental Program (111:205); Field Experience in Dental Public Health (111:208); Advanced Field Experience:
Dental Public Health (111:209); and Introduction to
Dental Public Health course (111:200). He teaches in Dentistry in the Community I (111:160); Fundamentals
of Clinical Dentistry (111:116); Preventive Dentistry, Community and Patient Care (111:118); and
Principles of Oral Epidemiology (111:204).
Research Activities:
Dr. Kuthy's primary research interests include the dentist workforce
and practice location sites; effect of extramural dental
school programs on willingness to treat underserved populations; oral health needs assessment for local and
state level policy development; impact of oral health safety net programs on the oral health of children;
and dental student career decision making.
National or International Professional Appointments and Activities:
Dr. Kuthy is a past president
of the American Board of Public Health. He is an ad hoc reviewer for
Special Care in Dentistry;
Community
Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology;
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology and
Endodontics;
Medical Care;
Journal of Aging and Health; and
Journal of Public Health
Dentistry. Dr. Kuthy serves on the Board of Directors, the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors. He is
the recipient of the following national awards: President's Award of the American Association of Public Health
Dentistry (1997); Outstanding Achievement Award from the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (1997);
and the Exemplary Service Award from the Chief Dental Officer, U.S. Public Health Service (1995). He has also
been the recipient of the Boston University Distinguished Alumni Award (2007). Dr. Kuthy
is a member of the Iowa
Dental Association, the Johnson County Dental Society, the Association for Health Services Research, the American
Association for Dental Research, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and the American Dental
Association.
