Brief Professional Resume:
Dr. Cowen joined the College of Dentistry in 1982. He is director of Patient Admission and Emergency Care and director of the Geriatric
and Special Needs Dental Program as well as a clinical professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. Dr.
Cowen treats private patients at the College of Dentistry, with an emphasis on geriatric, medically, physically and cognitively impaired
adults. He is a fellow of the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry and a diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry.
Teaching Activities
: Dr. Cowen participates in predoctoral clinical teaching in the Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit,
the Special Care Clinic, the Admissions Clinic, and the Emergency Care Clinic. He also conducts seminars and lectures in geriatric
dentistry for predoctoral and dental hygiene students and provides child and dependent adult abuse mandatory training for students.

: Dr. Cowen works in the Special Care Clinic and with the Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit.
Research Activities
: Dr. Cowen's research interests include epidemiology of oral disease in the elderly, etiology of tooth
loss, osteoporosis and fluoride intake, and the oral health of nursing home residents.

Dentistry, the International Association for Dental Research, the Iowa Public Health Association, the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry, and
