Brief Professional Resume:
From 2009-2011, Dr. Avila-Ortiz was an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the
University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2011 as an assistant professor
in the Department of Periodontics.
Teaching Responsibilities: Dr. Avila-Ortiz
is the course director for Periodontic Methods I. He lectures in the
periodontal curriculum for D3 and D4 students and also teaches a
resective osseous surgery literature review course for periodontal
residents.
Clinical Activities: He teaches
in the undergraduate periodontal clinic, the Department of Family
Dentistry's undergraduate comprehensive care program, and also in the
periodontal resident clinics. He is involved in patient treatment within
the collegiate intramural practice.
Research Activities: Dr. Avila-Ortiz's research interest is focused on alveolar bone, including understanding of healing dynamics based on local and systemic
individual patient features, analysis of site specific factors that determine bone quality, evaluation of therapeutic strategies to prevent alveolar ridge resorption after tooth loss and
implant site development techniques, in particular sinus floor elevation.
National or International Professional Appointments and Activities:
Dr. Avila-Ortiz attended the 2009 ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL). He
is also a member of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), the European Academy for Osseointegration (EAO),
the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the Midwest Society of Periodontology (MSP), the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP),
and international member of the Spanish Society of Periodontology (SEPA), as well as a founding member of the Spanish College of Oral Implantologists
(SCOI).
